Ok, so my COP's started dying with 170k on the clock, not really surprised. For the price, I decided to try the Accel COP's, got them from Jeg's for $24.99 each, very cheap IMHO. So I installed them, and they ran great.
Now, 2 months later, the plastic casings have cracked, and 7 of the 8 are mis-firing. The have been sent back, refund is on the way. Just thought I'd provide some input for others who may decide to give them a try.
Also, MSD has COP replacement's out now too, around the $50 price range, and I wouldn't hesitate to try those myself if I hadn't already installed OEM's.
I've replaced a number of these on my Expedetion like everyone else here. I saw another post that said to measure the coil with an ohmmeter to make sure it's open before you replace it; they were saying the plug wire can get corroded and build enough resistance to cause the misfire under load.
I haven't had any issues since to check this out, but the next time I see the problem I'll check it out this way before I just go off to buy a new coil. I've been buying the coils at Advance, they're about $50 there.
Whoever at Ford designed the locations of these coils should be sentenced to a year of changing them out over and over as punishment for laying it out this way.
