I have a 1997 Explorer and the windshield wipers are not working. I've changed the motor and the switches click when I turn on the wipers but...nothing happens. I've actually switched out the switches in different locations and everything else still works so I don't think that's it. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, or similar scenarios that they have had success fixing this problem?
Yes, that is what I meant the relays, for some reason I hand a brain block and couldn't remember what to call them. I've moved them around and they work with other functions still.
Now where is the malfunction switch? I'm not sure if I know where that is even if I saw it.
The multifunction switch is the actual switch on the steering wheel... the blinkers, brights, windshield wipers, spray...
You remove the cover and then its easy to remove the switch... Ive heard of some people cleaning them out, and cleaning the electrical conector.. if that doesnt work, the switch isnt too expensive at the parts store
I had a weird problem with my wipers too. If you're hearing the clicking when you turn the switch on then try the relays. Swap the run/park relay with the hi/low one and see what happens. I ended up also using the horn relay because I couldn't find the right relay at the parts store. Everything is working fine now, even the horn. One of my relays may have been sticking. But I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth.
I tried that as well, (funny my horn didn't work for awhile and it does now), anyway I'll fool around with the relays a little more. I just hope it doesn't rain soon. If I can't get this wiper issue fixed I'll probably have to take it to an electrical shop.
Try removing interior fuse 25 for a minute & reinstall it. If the "Central timer module/CTM/Generic electronic module/GEM just needs a good dope slap, that might get the wipers going again.
If not & if you have a VOM & want to test the multifunction switch, post back & i can tell you how to hook up your ohm meter & test it.
As they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Wish I could post a pic. According to the wiring diarams each pin of the multifunction is numbered, so instead of looking at a pic, you can find the correct pin numbers on the switch
For a 1997 Explorer:
Washer switch circuit:
Connect your VOM to pins 590 & 993.
"With wiper switch OFF, push washer switch in & read a closed circuit/zero ohms.
Release washer switch & read 103K ohms.
Wiper switch circuit: Connect VOM to pins 685 & 993.
Switch off read 47K ohms
Switch on intermitant read 11K ohms
Switch on low read 4K ohms
Switch on Hi read closed circuit/zero ohms.
Interval switch: Connect VOM to pins 590 & 993
"Rotate control toward OFF Ohmeter will show smoothly increasing resistance from 3K ohms to 103K ohms max."
Thats all there is to it.
The "Central timer module (CTM)/ generic electronic module (GEM" (I love saying that)
reacts to these different inputs by grounding the leads from the wiper relays to turn on the wipers/washer.
Everyone...thank you for your help I got it fixed. I replaced the wiper switch (wipers, turn signals, high beams, etc...) and the relays for the wipers and it fixed the problem and everything is working again.
