Ford Explorer - why so low resale value?

Gentlemen,

Perusing Ford Explorers, 2000 and younger, in the car ads, and I'm astonished by the low resale value. For $30k vehicles, it's not that hard to find a decent low mileage 2000 or 2001 for $6k ~ $8k.

I love the four-doors with the 3rd-row seats (do they all have it?) and the selectable 4wd (can you turn it off and run 2wd?).

So what's up?

Due to news coverage and in some cases reality, they have a record of faulty tires, easy to rollover and are hard on gas. I think the Blazer is worse regarding resale.

Yea they took a real hit after the Firestone blowout/rollover thing. Suburban housewives were unloading their Explorers in droves after they saw the news coverage. Of course the dealers saw them coming and explained very "sadly" how their rigs were now worth next to nothin. If an SUV is what you want there are some good deals out there.

I think production also plays big part. There are so many of them and SUV market is not that popular anymore.

I think it's more of a Ford using firestone as a scapegoat debacle. Let's remember why Ford discontinued the BroncoII.... Because they were a rollover happy deathtrap. Then lo and behold along comes the Explorer that's nothing more than a lenghtned BII,now here's the real shocker, The Exploder turned out to be a "rollover happy deathtrap" as well.........Imagine that.

Anybody with any kind of automotive experiance will realize that 26lbs of air pressure with an almost 4000lb truck is asking for trouble. Yet this the reccomended tire pressure from the MFG

Remember the Ralph Nader book "Unsafe at any speed" where tha swingarm rear suspension of the Corvair was lambasted as being entirely dangerous. Well the Explorers used a swing arm FRONT suspension.

Rather than stepping up to the plate and making things right with it's customers FORD rather successfully shifted the blame over to Firestone and in the process almost ran that company and it's employees out of buisness.

Me and all of my mechanic buddies all refer to Explorers as Exploders, there's a reason for this. They aren't really that good a vehicle. I would not buy one over 4 yrs old if I were you.

Regarding the 4wd. No, you can't turn it off.

With V6, it's "automatic", so it comes on by itself if you hit ice for example.

With V8, it's full time AWD.

Low resale. Heavily discounted sales on new trucks always hurt the used market.

They are tough on gas.

They have a terrible reliability history with respect to the V6 cam chain tensioner and the auto trans and the rear diff...

And yes, they were, prior to the current model which has a wider track and IRS, a twitchy, darty vehicle with 30+ psi in the tires. Ford spec'd 26 to make them wallow a bit instead of dart around.

I guess you missed the 60 minutes special where they tried to roll an Explorer and couldn't? Its like my cousin says who is an automotive expert they can't design vehicles to cover the stupid things that people do. A guy broke his back in a crash of a Toyota. He was going 90mph, running from the cops when he took an off ramp missed the corner and flew off the otherside. Tried to sue Toyota saying there car was at fault.

I drove a Corvair,(65 ragtop), not 1 problem. You need to drive the car/truck with your head in gear, not in the wind or multi tasking.

Hmm, I have a 1992 with the OHV V6 and I get 16mpg average in the city and 21mpg on the highway with an auto in it.

I also haven't had any problems with the A4LD, which is very similar to the 5R55E in the newer trucks. The newer trucks also have the Ford 8.8" rear end which is damn near bulletproof. BTW, I have 175k on mine with NO major problems and all original drivetrain.

We had a 1997 before I bought my 1992 and had NO problems with that either.

Its all about how well the trucks were taken care of.

Fred -

To answer your original question, 3rd row seats were available as an option from 2002 on.

Actually, what I want is a used vehicle that has low resale value for no good reason. The moon would be nice too.
