How important is it to have the heat shield over the starter?
The only reason I ask is because I was under the truck last night, and I found the shield was out of place. In fact it was so out of place, it was melted to the exhaust pipe just below the header.
Now, I don't know what rookie engineer decided that a heat shield should be made out of plastic, but he should be properly delt with. (Something along the lines of being melted to a large hot pipe. )
Anyway, this thing has been out of place for so long, I'm not sure it was making a difference. But just to be sure, has anyone had any problems ruinning without this shield??
I would not recomend keeping the heat shield off for too long, especially if you have headers. It's there for a reason (although i've never heard of a plastic heat shield...i agree with your proposal for dealing with that bozo) but the damages from extreame heat wouldn't be noticed immediately. Better safe than sorry, right?
LOL on the engineer solution. I am reminded of a time while working as a Diesel mechanic at a marina and having to remove some batteries from a rear storage compartment in the cockpit of a sailboat. I became stuck upside down, unable to push myself out. I was fortunate that I was working on it in the yard at the time and a co-worker came running over after hearing me yelling for help and pulled me out. He said he thought I knew that it took two people to remove the batteries from that particulary designed boat. I gave up on working on the darn things after a year because it always seemed like the engine was always an afterthought. OH Yeah, well, ummmm, jam it in there, hell we don't have to work on it. LOL
