What is the average mileage that a stock shock lasts ? I have an 04 ex diesel .I started to hear a clunking sound as if a strut or shock was loose or shot. Thought maybe the cold weather had the shock oil thick. I have shaken ,twisted and rattled everything under this thing. Should the springs be hitting the rubber snubbers. Now understand that I live in Pennsylvania. and of the ****ty potholes and roads. Thanks. I have read all the shock threads and no one addresses the mileage issue. I have 58000 miles on this vehicle.
Shock life is based on cycles, and not miles. A vehicle that sees rough roads, and a truck that sees off road use, vs. the truck that goes to the market all may have the same miles, but the shocks will all wear out differently. Too many variables to determine mileage.
Check yours by removing them, and cycling them by hand. A bad one, or worn one will be obvious.
FWIW, all 4 of the stock shocks on my X were completely shot after 50K miles. None of them had any pressure whatsoever. However, I've never heard any clunking from the shocks. You may have something else clunking or your shocks are more damaged than just loss of pressure.
I'd say you've used up the useful life of the stock shocks about 18K miles ago. Some would say 57K miles ago.
The truck does rest on the bumpstop. You should have between nothing and 3/4". Actually, we all should have about 4-6 inches between the spring & stop but Ford engineers thought otherwise.
