Well I can only speak for SCT brand, but they can do many things. You can creat a power/towing tune, an economy tune or a variation of those. I had some detonation problems in OD at throttle tip in, and we got rid of it with a SCT reflash. I just reflashed the stock chip, I didn't buy an aftermarket chip. The stock chip can be reflashed MANY times. The tuners/flashers can hold 4 tunes usually, your stock one and 3 others. Hope this helps. I have a friend in NJ who is trying out new tunes on newer Fords in hopes to find some fuel economy.

Talking

You will more than likely get a bump in mpg after you get over the "fun" honeymoon....
but NO tuner will pay for itself in mpg alone... but the fun factor MORE than makes up for it

SCT all the way

i love my 2 superchips on 7.3s. they are great. read error codes, calliberate shift points, ect. i love them. stock-30-60-90hp. BUT YOU WILL NEED A DOWNPIPE, OR ELSE MELT YOUR TURBO DOWN. i put a pipe on my 97. 99.5-up dont need 1 though.

I gained a little mileage with my custom Schip. I just ordered a SCT tuner to be able to change tunes. Everything I read says the SCT is the best tuning you can get for a ford product.

I have an '06 F350 Fx4, and I pull a 24foot stock trailer. I pulled 4 loads of 700# calves up and down the hills on a 2 lane state highway. Empty, the truck and trailer weigh 6,000#. The biggest load had 20 calves in it, so I probably weighed over 20,000#. I pulled in overdrive and had no problems with hills and accelerating out of the curves. My truck has the 6 speed manual, and is stock. My point here is that a 3,000# boat wouldn't create enough of a need situation to risk voiding my warranty. I don't think I would even know the boat was there unless I looked in the rear view mirror, or was pulling into a very challenging wind!
