dually rear axle

Today I decided to do my parking and rear brakes as they were needed. The question I have is behind the backing plate are there any seals. The inner seal on the passenger side was leaking, and I now have gear lube all over the hub and backing plate. Although it also looked as if there might be a seal in between the backing plate and the axle, where the four bolts are, but I am not sure. Truck is a 2000 dually four wheel drive. Thanks for all you guys input!!

Yes what you have is what is called a floating axle type rear end. You remove the 8 bolts on the hub of the axle there and pull the axle out. Stand it up in a corner or some place out of the way. Now go and examine the hub. There is a special nut inside that you remove and the whole assembly comes off. From there you can assess the damage (why the seal failed) and make the appropriate repairs.
Last time I had one apart was about 10 years ago and if I remember right the install specs on that special nut was tighten it down to 50 ft lb of torque and then back it off six clicks and leave it at that. Please verify those specs as I am not 100% sure that it's correct.
It's a very easy job, just heavy and messy with 90 wt.

Ok, thanks Kwik. I figured the seal on the inside was probly the one that went bad. Had to buy the special tool for the nut that your speaking of, I will do some investigating on how tight to get it. Well of to finish it up before it rains.

Finished the brakes and everything else. The nut gets torqued to 70 ft/lbs, back off 1/4 turn, and then tighten to 20 ft/lbs.
