I have a '91 F250 with a 7.3l diesel. I just bought it from another farmer, and I'm trying to get it started. I turn on the ignition, and there is a clicking noise under the hood ( the GP light is burnt out or does'nt work). I try to start it, even with ether, and nothing. What am I doing wrong?
The wait to start lamp should stay on for several seconds, then start clicking. If it just goes right into clicking, and skips the wait to start lamp, it could be dead glow plugs or a bad controller. As far as it not starting, how long has it sat for? It may have air in the lines, or be low on fuel and sucking air. If you are using ether, make sure you spray it into the intake AFTER the glow plugs stop clicking and have cooled down for a bit (1-2minutes), or you could create a nice mushroom cloud for the whole county to see....lol just kidding, but it could blow a head gasket or something.
How long has the truck sat before you tried to start it? How does it roll over? Wondering if batteries are low. Try getting a good overnight charge on a trickle charger. Next - Crack open a injector line and see if you are getting any fuel.
As stated keep away from ether. These operate a little different than a JD4440.
Thanks a lot for the advice on ether...don't want to blow up the truck (or worse, ME). The day I bought it (day before yesterday), it turned over and started w/o ether. I'm thinking now that the batts are probably low as he told me they probably needed replacing. I'll try that and post back.
By the way, my tractor is a FORD 7600, not a JD 4440 lol
You will need full battery power to start the engine and operate the glow plugs at the same time. Wally mart has 1000CCA which do the job.......850CCA is the minimum per battery.
Whwn you get decent batteries do a lift pump:
Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when cranking. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose.
Also put your truck info in a signature..........Please
I hate bein' the new kid...how do I add a signature???
Under the "Quick Links" menu is "Edit Signature". Also, make sure that the "show signature" box is check in your "options". I don't think your signature will show until you have enough posts. Until then, just put the info at the bottom of each post...
