Well I got the call today from Jim @ Blackstone Labs, and it ain't looking to good for my motor Instead of thing getting better, they've grown worse. The problem appears to be in the upper cylinders, possibly valves.
Alarming number are:
Aluminum 45 ppm (that's up from 14 ppm)
Chromium 13 ppm (up from 5 ppm)
Iron 140 ppm (up from 96 ppm)
Copper 10 ppm (down from 18 ppm)
Lead 17 ppm (up from 4 ppm)
Nickle 13 ppm (up from 5 ppm)
Potassium 26 ppm (unchanged)
Silicon 32 ppm (down from 47 ppm)
The sus viscosity @210 degrees Farenheit was 60.2 and the flashpoint in degrees farenheit was 400.
Jim also stated that (chuckling) "I'd be real hesitant about taking any long trips with this truck"
So, I've maintained excellent service records since I bought this truck. It's a '06 with only 15,500. I've had it for almost a year now.
So given this information, how should I approach my dealer with this information?? Or should I just let it go and see what happens???
Truck seems to run fine, but this latest report has got me somewhat worried.
I will say that I'm very impressed with the fact that Blackstone not only emails you a report, they also will call you and outline your report with you too. That is outstanding customer service!!
What oil are you using and what is your oil change interval? I see you're in Alaska, maybe your oil is too thick and doesn't provide proper lubrication until it warms up. I use an oilpan heater, Wolverine model 16, 250 watts wired to the block heater plug. Have you tried Rotella syn 5w-40? I think some of our Canadian friends use a 0w-30 or 40, perhaps they'll chime in.
I switched to the Rotella T Syn at 9100 miles and will continue to use it. My oil change interval is right at 5000 miles like the majority of the people here.
thats why i tell every one the test results will just worry you to death about something you cant do anything about....fords not gonna do anything unless you have issue's....run it everyday dont be scarred of it.....if it blows it will be under warrenty.
Perhaps on your next change you should take 2 samples and send them to separate labs and compare results.
Was there any metal stuck to your drain plug magnet when you changed oil?
Shoot!... its still getting broke in! those numbers are probly just right Honestly I wouldnt worry though, keep on drivin it, changing the oil and forget about blackstone reports....
I am so going to get flamed for this, I think 99% of the people on here uses rotella. I have been told by several Ford mechs that Rotella is terrible for our engines, and that it foams too easily. I have no proof of this, just a comment I am making. Why not try a diff oil and see if thing improve.
Maybe the rack with all the samples at the Lab got tipped over and now they don't know which one is which so...................................or maybe some disgruntled employee hacked into their computer and........................or maybe some postal worker............................
Blackstone called me once to tell me I had a lot of antifreeze in my oil, then after having a heart attack, they called back 3 hours later and stated they mixed up my sample with someone elses.
Depending on how long you have had the current oil in, you need at least a 1,000 miles on it to get a reading.
1) Drive truck and warm up motor for at least 30 minutes (good and hot).
2) Open Fumoto valve and pull a sample... it will be mixed up due to driving.
3) Mark bottle with Sharpie marker with name, date, mileage on oil and total on truck.
4) Send in and bite the bullet for new analysis.
5) Compare results... even though not a full 5,000 miles on oil, it may put your mind at ease until your next oil change.
--------------------------------------------
1) Are you using Motorcraft or Fram oil filters (OEM spec'd)?
2) Do you snap the filter into the cap before screwing cap down onto filter housing (just making sure good seal and filter is seated correctly)?
3) There is nothing wrong with Rotella-Syn 5W-40 and foaming has never been an issue with the synthetic... it meets CI4+ API service ratings... so your fine.
------------------------------------------------
Good luck and let me know... I think that for your values to be so high... the lab made a mistake?????
man jeeze, just dont get the tests done and then you won't worry yourself to death haha jk, up here i haven't heard of anybody gettin tests like this done though, could be i'm just way out of the loop
Its the peace of mind one gets for the $21.00 oil sample testing, but I guess its really only peace of mind if they tell you what you want to hear. And if they make mistakes........well, even what you want to hear isn't much comfort.
well, the way i see it, piece of mind comes with the 100k mile warranty, not for 20 bucks for testing. these engine are constantly breaking in untill 15 to 20k and will loosen up even more forever. me, i would start testing around 80k because soon the warranty will be out.
Perhaps on your next change you should take 2 samples and send them to separate labs and compare results.
Was there any metal stuck to your drain plug magnet when you changed oil?
Never mind, I see you have a Fumoto drain valve.
Talk about over kill . . . I'm w/ BowtieHtr, that's what 100K warrantees are for.
besides, if you brought your truck to me with a failed oil report, i would do everything i could to make a window in the block or some smoke to bellow out. if nothing happens, the report is bunk to me and fomoco. no offense, but some of you guys worry to much. man, i hardly ever raise my hood on my vehicle. but thats me.
I have to agree witht the rest of these guys, just drive it wherever you want and dont worry about it. I know the 6.0 has a bad rep, but its for things like injectors, turbos, head gaskets and oil leaks. The core of the Engine is pretty bullet proof. I have not heard of many failures with them and there are plenty of 6.0's running around with 300K + these days.
