I have a 1993 bronco with the 351 in it and i am hearing a howling noise I was told it could be the pinion gear but I want to change the fluid first. What weight Of oil should I use, Synthetic ?, and how much to they hold
Thanks Hunter
your haynes manual should tell ya. get one , i cant recall off hand. you can run synthetic but if there is a problem its all gonna come out again anyway so no bother. if you have a factory limited slip out back you will also need a tube of the friction modifier. remove the rear cover and inspect the gears and spider gears. use brake cleaner to get all the crud out of there. by the way its gonna stink something awful
I am in the process of replacing the rear end on my 89 Bronco. The old gears are fine. They are 3.55. Make an offer and they are yours. For that matter I would send you the entire rear end I took out. Only thing wrong with it is the drivers side shaft needs replacement and so does the drivers side outer bearing and seal. I have the bearing and seal and could send that too. I have no idea what shipping would be but I'm sure there are flat rate places that would handle it for cheap if you pick it up from their depot.
We tried 3 times to get it back together with one of those axle saver things that is the bearing and the seal together. Every time it would break. After ruining $90+ in new parts I decided to get a used rear end and swap the entire thing.
I was able to talk my way into a good deal on the rear end. So now I have spare everything for the rear end sitting at our shop. I figure it cost me about 100$ more to do the swap vs. the repair.
I need to bolt up the shocks, sway bar, and bleed the brakes and I will be done..... oh... and put in gear oil.... We are using 90 weight gear oil.
