Locking header bolts

I am going to use some nice copper gaskets when I put a set of hooker headers on this spring, and I was wondering if it is worth it or not to use a set of locking header bolts.

Has anyone used them and if you have, would you recommend them to me? I was looking at a set of stage 8 bolts that are right around $50 for the set. anybody have any recommendations? should I use them, or are they not worth it?

Thanks!

(I would post this in the exhaust forum, but it isnt as active, and I know that there are guys in this forum that have put headers on their truck)

I dont know if the set you are looking at has grade eight bolts that are coated so that they do not rust but I have just put grade eight bolts with lock washers in my exhaust manifolds because the bolts kept backing out. They have not backed out since I did this. I just went to the local hardware store and matched my old bolts with new grade eight bolts and lock washers. It cost me under ten dollars for everything, compared to the kits that could have cost much more. The bolts that I got are not coated with that antirust stuff but it was not worth the extra cost to me. I also used the copper gaskets on my manifolds because the other ones kept blowing out and I have been happy with those as well.

Stage 8 bolts are great. It is a pain to get the locks on but they work great. Make sure you get the correct length.

Yeah, these are grade 8 bolts, they have a specially designed locking device that makes them impossible to back off, But that is exactly what i was wondering was wether or not they were worth the money.

I have a 351W, and on their site, they had 3 different sizes under the 351W 3/4, 1, and i think 1 1/4. How do i know for sure which ones would be the right size if they list three different lengths for the same engine?

You probably are going to have to pull the ones that are in there right now. Another thing that you can do is go to the Ford dealership and ask them about it. They would probably be able to answer that by looking up replacement parts and telling you what the bolt sizes are on those. If it were me, I would not want to pay that much for bolts, but I have never used or seen the ones that you are describing.

here is the link to them if you want to see what they are. I have heard good things about locking bolts, but I dont know if I need them for my application or not.

I looked at the link and I could be wrong, but I think that you could find these bolts and washers at a hardware store, I could not really tell what the bolts look like exactly. Since you are not going to be doing this until spring time I would look at a hardware store when you get a chance. You can probably find very similar stuff and if you get it at a hardware store it will be considerably cheaper, if you are pressed for time or have the money you can buy the kit and be done with it.

I was just curious, the locking mechanism on them is specially designed and is pretty neat, actually.

Pretty neat, bolts are machined to take a retaining clip & E-ring. Cost seems to be in machining the bolts because hardened E-rings & retainers are dirt cheap.

1/2" Gr-8 bolts 4" should be about a buck each. I own a hardware store and that's what I sell them for, cheaper in a box of 50, about half.

Seems like Loctite High Temp Thread Locker would produce the same result on a street engine.
