We must be talking about two different sounds then. Mine is not a gear whine, I know that sound! His might be a gear whine. I will rephrase mine to be a "squeaky, brake-like sound."
dej, I think it is the word "whine" that is throwing people off. That word usually does refer to a gear whine or howl. From your post though, I thought you meant what I am talking about, more of a squeaky sound coming from the wheel area. I still think it is brakes, probably a dragging caliper or even brake dust. Try blowing out all the dust from behind the wheels with a high pressure water hose or something (don't breathe all that asbestos dust in).
it is a little hard to describe the sound. it is kind of like a whistle sound that goes back and forth from a medium to high pitch sound. it alternated from medium to higher pitch medium, higher pitch, and it starts at 10 mph and either i cant hear it any more at 25 mph from road noise, or it goes away. any ideas. and some times it is silent, except i can do anything while driving to make it silent, but i have noticed that when it is silent if i tap on the brakes, the sound returns. i have not been able to do replicate that again cause lately it has not been silent.
what is the caliper design on Broncos? i had some one suggest if is a sliding caliper, that it might be frozen and only one side of the pads might be pushing and the other might be just riding on the disk making the noise, which would explain why when i tab on the brakes it does not go away cause the caliper is not pulling the other pad against the rotor and only one pad is actually pressing on the rotor. but if this was the case i would think it would be pulling when i would brake but it really doesnt do it at least i dont think it does.
This might be it. I have a 96EB and had the same problem. There is a rubber dust shield on the back side of of the front disc. This shield has dried out and the noise is the friction between the two. It is very difficult to impossible to lubricate this area. The noise stopped when I pulled the disc and repacked the bearings putting a little extra grease inside that shield. It worked for a year and started again. I replaced the shields, never came back. This shield is not on most models. I was told these came on a 96 1/2. Hope this helps.
