400 for $100

I have a chance to buy a 400 with a C6 (I think that's what it is) for $100. I'm sure this is a good deal, but what can I expect for $100? They came out of a Bronco.

I would make sure you pull the oil pan or heads and verify it is a 400. Unless your ok with it only being a 351M.

What would I be looking for to determine which is which? I heard a lot of people like the 351M better than the 400!

M-block crankshaft casting ID codes are located on either the first counterweight (opposite the first throw at the front of the engine), or on the side of the first throw. Casting ID codes are recessed into the unfinished (raw cast) surface. Sometimes the characters are faint, so you may have to thoroughly clean the area with a solvent to find the ID code.

The 351M cranks are marked 1K or 1KA.

The 400 cranks are marked 5M. 5MA, or 5MAB.

If you have to rebuild it, swapping a 400 crank and pistons into it is a very small additional cost over rebuilding it as a 351M.

alot of people like the 351w over the 400...not the 351m over the 400.

I know this has been beat to death in this forum - but what is the significant difference of a 351C and the 351M/400?

The 351C has a shorter deck height in the block (9.2" vs 10.3"). It has smaller main bearings and journals. It has the same bore and stroke as a 351M, being 3.5" Stroke and 4" Bore.

The bell housing bolt pattern mates a small block bell housing/tranny to a 351C, but you need a big block bell housing/tranny to mate to a 351M/400 motor, with exception of some rare 400 FMX blocks.

id say mostly the c's were in the era of big solid cams, big carbs and high compression closed chamber heads...as well as the above stated.

You might check the vin on the bronco if it is available and that would at least tell you if it originally had a 400. It is unlikely someone replaced it with a 351m if it originally had a 400, although possible. What year is the Bronco?

1.) It turns out it was a 351M.

2.) He sold it today before I could get up to see it!

Thanks for all the input. I've seen a 400 for sale a few times. Maybe now I'll be a little more aggresive.
