I have an 85 with a EFI-302, the engine cuts off while driving, it will crank over but will not start. I have replaced the TFI-IV module last year and just recently tried a new Starter Solenoid Relay which I thought corrected the problem but it did not. Before investing in a new EEC module are there any other parts I should look into first.
Did you put the electric grease on the TFI module before you put it on? I had the same problem and it turned out that I had forgotten to put the grease on my new TFI module so it wasn't getting a good connection with the distributor. Just a thought.
Yes, I did apply the grease, the truck has been running fine for the last year so I do not think it is the TFI, the problem started a couple of days ago, over the last year I have replaced just about every part under the hood except the EEC which is the original part, I have not replaced any parts on the ignition system either.
I've got the same truck (year and engine). A couple of years back mine did the same. I changed out the TFI, also, but did not cure it. Turned out to be the stator/coil assembly inside the distributor (beneath the rotor). If you're getting fuel (i.e. not a fuel pump relay, bad fuel pump, etc.), you may want to check yours.....
Honestly, I gave up after the TFI module didn't fix it and had the local shop troubleshoot and repair it, so they did the install. I don't believe it's that big a deal. I would think you'd simply need to pull the cap and rotor, and you should be able to get to the necessary parts from there.
hey bill had the same problem on my 85EB replaced the tfi module. thought i solved the problem! but low and behold it started doing it again turned out to be the pick up in the distributor was not very hard at all to do. if you atempt to do this remember where the rotor is pointing mark the casing with chalk ,paint or something to use as a reference for re-assembly.the hardest part i found was driving the roll pin out of the dist.(cost about $15.00) hope this helps
You may also want to price a remanufactured distributor, while you're at it (just be sure that the dist. in question comes with the coil assembly..... I would think it would). I can't remember what the parts cost, but I may have been better off with swapping out the whole deal (considering the age of my truck) for just a few dollars more.
My truck came with a Duraspark III Ignition, am I correct to believe that the stator/coil only came on the Duraspark II Ignition? On my Distributer there are no vacume lines to it like on the Duraspark II, the EEC controls the advance on the Duraspark III correct? If I got this wrong please let me know.
I was under the impression that the stator / pickup coil came on both, but maybe I'm off or confusing my terms. I have the same ignition system as yourself (no vacuum lines; EEC controlled advance). As mentioned earlier, the shop troubleshot my system and installed (according to them) a new stator / coil assembly. Should be one living under your rotor, I would think.....
Thanks for your suggestions everyone, The problem turned out to be the wire connection to the external fuel pump, While the truck was running I played with the wires around the pump and Lo and Behold the truck stalled so I replaced the connector and were back in business.
Restorit, I would look into that Pickup Coil, my manual says there is a P/C in the Duraspark II and not the Duraspark III, I asked a friend of mine's father who was a mechanic and he said if it has an EEC then it should not have a P/C. I looked at my Distributer but did not see a P/C in it, hope this helps.
