Took truck to tech.Took off valve covers and I got a few bent push rods.Im hoping that was the ticking noise I heard before the real poping noise started. Now I dont know what to do this engine has been bored,RV cam weiand intake edelbrock carb, and headers. This is the first time this has happened in two years.I mean something aint right. When I bougt this truck I was told it had 375hp@2800rpms its not a fast truck with 410 gears but it will pull.My options are spenting about 2000.00 buying a set up 460ci and having it put in or taking the 400 puting new cam timing gears chain push rods lifters etc.Whatever brand I go with I want to make sure everthing is running together like its supposed to.Any advice appreciated.

I would call Tim at TMI. You can get the info. at the left of your screen, under the current sponsors. ( TMeyer Inc). Bent pushrods, especially a few, means there is something seriously wrong with the valve train geometry. If the heads were milled, and someone used stock pushrods, or if wobble rockers were installed improperly, or without guide plates, the pushrods will fail. He could probably give you good advice, with a phone conversation. He also sells whatever you would need.
yea...sounds like the hyd lifters were squashed a bit or something when it was put together.
375hp is more than you will get out of a 460 unless it's built and it would be fast with those horses no doubt....so something doesn't measure up. 375 @2800 really is odd I think.
I have just posted once when I seen it didnt come up real quick I hit reply again very new at this. And Ive talked to a few companies jegs elderbrock summit and they say it would not be hard to get those kind of horses out of the engine because it was designed to make most of its power at a low rpm range stock to stock there not much differnce between the 400 & 460
I believe what these companies were trying to convey, was the PEAK horsepower levels can reach that high. However, peak horsepower would be reached far higher than 2800 rpms. Torque could easily reach 375 ft-lbs at 2800 rpms with the proper build. Sure, you could reach 1 hp per cubic inch, but not at such a low rpm.
Just something for you to check---. This one has bitten me twice when someone else did the heads and installation of a non stock cam.
The ford mechanics did the worst one to my brother when they installed a crane cam in his 79 400 bronco. You must remove the exaust valve rotators if you increase cam lift by much at all. Much grief (bent pushrods and finally a bent valve head. Thank goodness it did not break off!) before we discovered what the problem was.
Another one is installing valve spring ht and using VSI (or other) spring shims. Apparently some people do not know to change installed ht of springs with aftermarket cams. Which pushrods are bent? The exaust?
I think it has to be something other than a simple lifter preload problem on installation. LOL
Sorry for the double post. I forgot to suggest something on the "popping" sound. My brothers 400 did something similar with the bent valve head. Bent intake valve head will pop back through carb. Bent exaust will not pop as much. With bent pushrods, you may have broken a valve spring as well, and if you are lucky the valve has slightly kissed the piston and bent. If you arent so lucky, the valve hit the piston (actually the other way around) and the valve head broke off---------NOT GOOD if that happened. I see someone did replace the cam---better check!
