was feeding cattle the other day with bosses f450, its got a flat bed that picks up 2 big 3,000 pound round hay bales, and went over some frozen ruts, well bounced over them anyway, and ripped off the trany cooler, and didnt know it until the truck wouldnt come out of 4th gear but was able to get in low range to move it. I was wondering if you think replacing the cooler will fix it or did I fry the tranny. Its a 7.3 with a 6 speed manual tranny.
Heres a testimate to the super duty front end, my boss also has a f550 set up the same way but its a crew cab. Weve put over 80,000 miles on both trucks with the entire stabilizer system ripped off, if thats not tough I dont know what is!!!

Sure you don't have the linkage tweaked or a broken motor or tranny mount putting a bind on things and not allowing it to shift?
I dont know for sure what is wrong with it just that the tranny cooler is ripped off and it's stuck in 4th. I hope i dont have to pull the tranny or even worse the motor.
They dont...unless someone stuck in an aftermarket cooler.
I havnt had my 6spd lock up on me yet but my old NP435 did once...had to take out the shifter and stick a good sized prybar in there to get it outa gear. I believe it has somthing to do with the gears not messing properly. I think its like a 1/1million chance of it happending but when it happends...it happends. These Zf's are really expensive so dont force the shifter hard in any direction. If heard of ppl breaking off the aluminum cover that the shifter bolts into...PITA.
Ide take the shfiter out and get a flashlight and look down in there(might need a mirror)...if noting looks bent, cracked or broken then I proceed with your mission. Put the shifter back in and try to lightly roll the truck back and forth, when the trucks moving in either direction move the shifter in all-directions. I had to fiddle with my NP435 for about 5 min doing this and she poped right out.
Keep us informed and goodluck.
PS. Engine should not be running while doing this.
Looked at the truck today and NO its not the cooler its the AC lines. Just figured it was the cooler and that was the problem. Any way the stick will move but the tranny wont come out of gear. I already looked at the linkage and housing and everything is fine their. So started the dissasimble today with draining the oil. Their was only about a pint in the pan, so im guessing the tranny is fried. But will see when it gets dropped out and torn down. At least its a 6 speed id work on one of them any day rather than a auto.
Well first off the 6spd tranny does have a cooler on it.Also it uses atf tranny fluid .
If you ripped of the lines going to it ,it would have pissed red fluid all over the place because there is a pump inside the tranny that circulates the fluid.
Also these trannys are just as complicated as a auto tranny trust me !
