Frame Off Restoration Help

Hey guys

Im going to start a frame off restoration on my '94 f150XL, its a super cab short bed 2 wheel drive, 300ci with a 5 speed mazda. The drivetrain has 256000 miles on it and im more interested in leavin that for now for mileage bragging rights. However I am going to remove the body from the frame so i can clean everything thouroughly, it was a new england truck with alot of her miles on the salty I95.

If anyone has any input or help i would really appreciate it.

Thanks
Patrick

It's a lot work, but if you have time, its a great thing. My suggestion is too take many pictures (so you don't forget how it goes back together) and take your time. Get yourself some plastic zip locks and label each bag with things like "front fender bolts" and stuff like that.

Dissassemble the front clip, Take the bed off, strip the cab and then take it off. If the truck lived in salt, taking every thing apart to see some hidden rust is a must. Get the frame sandblasted if you can, if not there are some products that can be brushed on to be made to paint over rust, Like POR 15, Rust Bullet, Rust Encapsulator. You can read up on those products, just search those products and threads related.

Take Pictures and Label.... Ask Questions... Good Luck.

When I did my frame off, I did it in stages, starting with the safety stuff. I would clean and rebuild the parts. When you take everything apart, take lots of pics, and buy some masking tape and a sharpy to label things like electrical connections.

Oh, before you start, spend some time down low with a pressure washer getting the underside as good as you can. There is still going to be a lot of junk, but this will help make the teardown a little cleaner.

Thanks, Yeah thats what i figured, i have been cleaning and recleaning inside out under over etc and i went through and sprayed down the underbody with an anti corrosion solution so it will hold together a little better during teardown. My plan as of now is to start by disconnecting everything (labeling) then removing the bed then removing the cab and nose. If i can id like to start with the frame and drivetrain then working my way up through the truck. Im also looking for a donor truck.

My frame off restoration is weeks away from being finished. I agree...take alot of pitchures. Be sure to check the rear shock mounts as they tend to hold water. My original frame now has a gaping hole where the shock mount used to be. I used Rust Ecaspulator and am thrilled with it so far. My only problem is that I have to drive my truck across the country weeks after it is expected to be finished. Little time and no room for error...sounds like I'm set up for disaster. Good luck, most importantly...have fun!
