I personally would recommend the OEM part. (Motorcraft)

Try Wal-Mart (not sure if the 05+ filter changed from previous ones) or even your local dealer.

K&N is pretty good. You get like 3 hp extra and a 1,000,000 mile warranty,

Yes...the '99-'04 air filters are all the same. In '05-'07 (not sure of '08) the air filters are the same.

Good luck finding a Motorcraft air filter at Wally. All I can say...is that Wally does not carry them around here. Wish they did. But...I also recommend Motorcraft, NAPA, or WIX.

I have purchased my Motorcraft air filters from http://www.rockauto.com/ in the recent past. Very good pricing...IMHO.

Hope this helps...

Ed, We're talking about an air filter here, not real parts. Wal-Mart isn't going to eat into your market of starter motors and alternators. You already have competition from Autozone, Pep Boys, Checker on that stuff.

I get my filters at Advanced Auto Parts, using Purolators for all my applications.

I'm getting away from the K&N phase.

Hey Hank Hill,

what's wrong with K&N, I am certainly misunderstanding you.

While I don't condemn them (I've been using them for over a decade), I simply am looking for less dirt in my motors. I know all the sales pitch points so we don't need to go over them one at a time.

K&Ns give an extra couple of horsepower, sure, but I'm not 16 any more and don't care to turn my air filter lid upside down, any more than I want three horsepower with the dirt that rides in on them. I don't think my seat of the pants dyno can tell the difference, and the V10 doesn't much care.

In easy driving applications it's a minimal difference, but it's a difference nonetheless. I've retired them and gone to paper.

That's about it...No earth-shattering revelations.

FWIW, I've been bracket racing/drag racing for years and after spending time on true dyno's both engine and chasis at an actual track with real life timeslips you will not see an increase anywhere at the 20hp increase and under....just the bear facts folks. So if somebody is telling you they felt a big increase, they are full of sh#$!! My car is a driver and I've run it with a K&N filter and regular top, a K&N with a K&N top, a regular $2.99 air filter and regular top, a regular air filter with the K&N top, have made a carb pan to seal cowl area so all incoming air charge is cool ambient air with all combo's mentioned above as well as no air cleaner at all....guess what....not a damn thing changed at any point on the race track-so spend your $40+ and keep telling yourself it makes a difference. I also have run all K&N's in my work trucks and towed my car all over with my old truck and I did not see any milage increase anywhere. The ONLY thing that has shown a mileage increase was running regular dino gasoline instead of ethenol...I always was 1-1.75mpg down running the ethenol fuels.

Sorry Ed. I'm still a cheap *******.

But I didn't know they didn't have air filters.

Tell you what...next time someone asks I'm gonna put a link to your site. I usually do and in fact had it in my original post but when I search for it it said it was the same for 99-06 5.4L & 6.8L. However, I know for a fact that the 04+ 5.4L 3V uses a panel filter and not the cone type. I saw the error at the site and wondered if the 3V V10 went the same direction. Not knowing I decided not to link it.

The '05+ V10 also uses a new panel filter...no more cone.

I'm kind of torn on this subject myself. A regular paper filter is around $40 while a re-usable K&N is around $50. Never noticed a real performance or mileage change with a K&N, but I do like the one-time cost. Of course, if it allows more dirt to pass, then the shortened engine life more than offsets the filter savings. What to do, what to do!?!?

Scientific testing has shown that a v10 with a k&n will go 250,000 miles where as a paper filter will let it go 251,000 miles. LOL

I really don't think you are going to substantially take longevity out of your engine, IF at all, by using a cotton gauze and oil filter. The sheer economics of it make it a good choice.
