just have a couple questions concerning the dana 44 in the front of the ole beast, first can i put a locker or a posi in it? second all i have seen listed as far as aftermarket posi units go they are listed as only workin with 3.92 and numerically higher gear ratios whats goin on with that
I think theres pretty much every locker or limited slip available for the D44. Id go with a limited slip in the front end unless you are into some really hardcore off-roading. Im sure some of the sponsors on here have what you are looking for.
If all you want to do is open the diff cover and put a locker in, then you will have to get somthing like a Lock right, aussie locker, powertrax, quick lock, detroit ezlocker, ect...
I would suggest a Aussie Locker. It is one of the cheapest ones(if not the cheapest), quietest, and strongest.
I leave my hubs locked and drive my 79 on the road in 2wd all the time, and it turns fine. IN 4wd it turns pretty good too, unless I don't let off the skinny pedal, then I can tell it is alittle harder to turn(just noticable, but I try not to turn to much when on the gas so I don't overheat or work my steering system).
If you plan on changing gears, you could put a limited slip in at the same time(cost about the same as the aussie locker), and it would be easier on your front end.
hey i have a related question...i dont mean to steal the thread tho, maybe this will help who ever started the thread....can you or will a low pinion LS 44 carrier (4.10) fit in a hi-pinion diff (4.10)...i dont want to swap the gears as the high pinion is reverse cut so i know the R&P wont interchange...i just want to know if i could swap my limited slip into an open front axle, due to the hi and low pinion differences.

yes you can swap carriers and for a traction aiding device in the front of a 44 take your pick multiple choices I prefer arb but they are expensive but well worth it
