I loved my job, it was the work I hated. Seriously, I didn't mind going to work. I worked at Mack Trucks Inc. for 38 years. In an assembly dept., there are so many people to talk to, it's like a big family. But, THEN Volvo bought Mack, it didn't seem as much fun anymore. So, a bonus was offered to retire, I took the money and ran. I ran straight out and bought myself a Harley Fatboy. I'm in the same boat as ddrumman, I'll enjoy riding my bike and the young guys can work. Sing me out as "Retired @ 56"
makes me feel a little better, i was told this morning im now hated more than lawyers,........but heck if ive got a step ahead of the irs, im doing good
I hate mine.. to much political bs and the boss thinks we have to get his and the office's lunch everyday. Not to mention doing his personal errands. If it wasn't for that I might be able to handle it.
Eric,
I loved my job as a police officer and am now retired and do part time work as a school crossing guard. No decisions, no headaches.
When I DID work, I had a lieutenant that was a real pr*ck. He would alway s send the lowly patrolman to "fetch" his lunch or coffee, NEVER a "thank you".
I'm an independent sales representative. The job is dull, boring and offers absolutely no satisfaction. However I am my own boss, the hours are flexible and the pay is not too bad. Hopefully I'm making some good investments and saving enough money that within ten years or so I'll be able to quit and start doing something I like.

im not gonna say i hate my job but i don't love it either, i work in a warehouse with several other people most of whom are great. it pays the bills, dosn't stress me out, and i get to drive home at most nights at around 10 when the roads are empty.
i work second shift, nothing like heading to the shooting range before work, and then having a few beers with the guys after work.
Yep, I pretty much hate my job. Almost 18 years I've been in this shop, have put up with all kinds of crap over the years, had the Service Manager position dumped in my lap a few years ago (I wanted nothing to do with it, but have been doing it anyway...) and then the owner hires in a guy with far less capabilities than myself and my other tech for almost $3.00/hr more than I've been getting. I've tried repeatedly to get management to discuss the situation without so much as a whisper of response from them. That pretty much did it for me...and for my other tech. We're both in the market for new employment. The service department is going to be in a baaad way when both of us "drop the bomb" with our notices. Sad that it has come to this....
Ok let's look at this, I have one helicopter it has just over 1000 hours on it and it flies about 10 hours a month, the closest maintenance interval is the 30 hour chip plug inspection followed by the 50hr oil sample. Then the "big" one the 100 hour airframe and EMS inspection all of 2 days work. So for the normal day job I am in at 0700 daily inspect aircraft, enter flight info into computer system check supplies have breakfast with med crew home by 1100. Get paid salary so I am paid for 40 hrs regardless. If pilot breaks aircraft at 1200 and I have to come back to fix it is overtime starting at 2 hrs Minimum.
I'm an electrical engineer, specializing in transmission line design - you know, the big ugly towers that nobody wants to look at. I think they're beautiful though!
I love my job, but it isn't my dream job. That would be a community college math and engineering instructor. Every so often I get to teach a class, and pardon the cliche, but teaching is very challenging and rewarding. Emotionally rewarding, that is....definitely not financially. And an added bonus - every time I teach a class, I learn something too.
The perfect job for me would be a consultant,People would call me on the phone and ask my opinion on something, I would give it and they would be billed by way of their visa/mastercard.........lets say 50 bucks for 10 minutes.........beat that for a perfect job
Consultants are usually experts in their field. Yours would be?

Were money not an issue, I'd teach for free.
I go back to the days when you could spot the engineering students by the slide rules they carried (I still have mine) and I had a few instructors that left lucrative positions to teach because that is where they were happiest. Those teachers brought something special to their classes because they taught with a passion that the students could sense. Hopefully you will find your way to the classroom some day .... I think both you and your students will be better for it.
