Got a few questions about my truck for entering in truck pulling competitions.
First: It's a 76 F250 4.10 D60 Trac-Loc with Dana 44 up front/390 2V/NP435 4 spd. Nothing super special...yet.
I plan on entering the Stock Street class...which allows me to use headers and full exhaust...will headers help me in this situation? It's only got a stock cam and heads, so I was wondering if this is a good idea?
Next: What type of tires do you all think a guy should run for this? I've got 16 inches rims on it so the possiblities are not limited.
Anything else that will help me win in this class?
I'm new to this and I'm hoping to at least not embarass myself...haha.
Headers will help out quite a bit, will they allow you to run w/out a muffler?? Since you've already got 16" rims I'd go with a cooper STT, they rate the best with off road traction. You'll definately want to make sure your clutch is in good condition and adjustment. What's the weight limit of the class? If you can put some suitcase weights or something somewhere will help too.
BFGoodrich All-Terrains works really well at any type of track and for the stock motor you have you will be able to get your RPM up. I personally run Baja claws but you will need more then a 390 on a good track to get them to spin. Run low range, 2nd gear. you wanna get into it right away in the beginning before the box gets up onto the pan so in the first few feet get ur engine up to rpm.
i have a 1978 F150 with a 351m... i pulled it a couple of times... it used to have the C6 in it... in low range the truck didn't have enough ummff to spin the half bald 31" tires, lol just kinda picked the sled off of the start line... drug it about 75 feet and bogged down... i even thought it was funny... since then i have put the np435 in and i took it again i figured if nothing else it'd break something or spin... lol, so first attempt i pulled 1st gear hi range... couldn't get the sled off the line.... so... i tried 2nd gear low range... still couldn't pick it off... so i went to low low... got her then held her down and i think i got 150 ft out of her.. lol it was fun and that's all i went there to have. I think it's unreal the kind of traction u get on a track..
Low...low Range? Wow...haha, must've spun the nuggets out of the old 351m. Was the 351 built at all? Low miles?
A lot of my buddies have been doing this for a few years now and I'm going to give it a shot, if anything, it'll be blast for sure, I'm used to being laughed at...haha.
What's better to run for tires; tall or short, wide or skinny? I'm planning on running some Goodyear Super Sport HT's in 265/75/R16's...I can get them at about 3/4 tread real cheap at a tire discount store. They're on 8 inch rims...would wider be better? Comments?
I've also heard a taller tire is generally better, but there is a point to when the tire is too tall, I'm just wondering where this point may be at?
A blown tire is not such a big deal, I'm buying all my "pulling" tires from a local guy that pulls them from junk yards...VERY cheap...$10 a tire...mounted! Generally he can find several sets of the same tire for next to nothing, it does depend upon the popularity of the tire, etc., but for most common tires, usually it isn't a problem.
Would a 265 be too tall? I'm wondering if a 235 wouldn't be better. One way is to try it and find out, but I'm must curious if anyone has an opinion before I make my initial selection.
