Unhappy 5-spd trans when BOOM!

I have a 1989 F-150 5-spd 4x4, 300 C.I.

I was driving down the road at 60mpg, and then BANG! Now all I have is fourth gear. The clutch is engaging....But I don't have a clue if it is internal or what? What could cause this? It's probably expensive. No junk yard around here has a 4x4 transmittions for my truck.

Thanks in advanced!

Does the shifter still move and only 4th is good, or is the shifter sloppy all over and it is stuck in 4th?

More info please.

Yes, the clutch does engage and disengage. I can push in the clutch and Shift into all of the gears same as usuall. When I let out on the clutch in a gear, it makes a little wining noise. Fourth gear is the only gear that actually moves the truck. All gears feel like they are there with the shifter. (feeling the shifter engage into the gear) I can not just put it into gear with out the clutch pushed down. I asked one guy and he said the fourth gear might be one to one for that transmittion? That might be why I still can use fourth only. Who knows?

Well, he is correct about 4th being 1:1. So yes, in 4th basically what hits the tranny input shaft is what goes out the output shaft.

I am no tranny expert, but I'd say some drive gear is shelled out/broke and the tranny has to be taken apart to be fixed. No miracle cure from Lucas , etc... but I'm sure I am giving you nothing you didn't already know.

Since your truck is a 150, that should make your 5 speed the lighter Mazda tranny. They are speedy, but the ZF 5 speed from an F250 (and larger) is a much stronger tranny.

Wish I had better news for you.

So does this mean that the Ranger would have the same transmission as my F-150? Would it be the Mazda M5R1 or the M5OD-R1?

I have not had the time to pull the darn tranny out yet. Maybe tonight. I'm sure it's in pieces inside of it. Big maraca!

I'm not familiar with this particular tranny, but if it's anything like the T-5, then 4th gear is the only one that doesn't use the counter-shaft. The output shaft gets tied directly to the input in 4th gear. That would tell me that your countershaft isn't turning for one reason or another, rendering all other gears useless. I'm guessing the bearings on the countershaft seized up and the end of the countershaft that meshes with the input is shot. If you're lucky, you'll need just the countershaft and bearings. More than likely, though, it'll be a LOT more than that.

The F150 and ranger versions of the mazda 5 speed are not the same. One is an M5R1 and the other is an M5R2.

Well, I took it out. This ended up being a M5R2 or a E9TA-BA. Now I just have to take the tranny to the shop to hear the verdict.

Well... short of having a good, cheap direct replacement- sounds like you are making progress.

The tranny shop called me, The input shaft and the cluster has no teeth where they meet up. $1200 to fix this. Anyone know where I could buy a rebuilt good tranny?

(i forgot to add, this truck has 300k miles on it)

$1200 to fix that sounds like an awful high price. You can pick up rebuilt trannies on ebay for less. Whatever you do, don't let that shop touch it.

I'll throw in my .02

the mustang ranger and 150 all use variations of the m5od.

if this tranny isn't oiled properly, it will die. DIE DIE DIE!

Which is quite unforunate.
1200 seems high when i can get a full rebuild of an m5od r2 for 800 dollars.

Mustang posted a sight long ago, but they want 2000 for a new one with yoru old one. pluss you pay freight. So, grab a junker and switch around your houseings and such.

I dont suggest useing one from a ranger or mustang.

A zf is overkill on a 302 i feel. haveing granny gear is useless. Its a towing transmission. I can tow things fine with my m5od and good clutch work.

y, a ZF doesn't do much on a 302 as they are not typically the engine of choice for heavy towing. I thought we were talking about a 300 though... put a ZF on it and pull a house down the road! Another good thing a ZF does is to make sure it is not the weak spot of your drive line. My general luck has been all other Ford OD trannies is they are weak.... not a ZF though.

Just my .02

Also above I meant "spendy", not "speedy" lol 300 is a damn fine engine and ZF equally so, but speedy would not be the first good quality that comes to mind!
