My 89 Bronco has the black rubber/chrome trim. My understanding is that this is just "glued on". If so, what's the best way to remove the trim and any leftover adhesive? I'm guessing that I'll have to touch up the paint after.
Main reason for this is I'm looking to spray either body color Rhino Lining or Line-X from the lower body break to the bottom of the rockers. That should help with the rock chips, etc
I just replaced the moulding on my Bronco. It is just glued on. I peeled mine right off. To get the glue residue off I sprayed it with W-d40 then scraped off the residue. It is a time consuming process. I bought new moulding. Cutting the moulding to match the old one was the hardest. Before you cut your new moulding sit it out in the sun for a few hours so it becomes soft (easier to cut). Also I put masking tape where the residue stops so while I'm scraping it off my scraper doesn't hit my paint. Another tip is on the door mouldings. They do not stick too well because thaey are so large. I used superglue there. I ended up using super glue everywhere. So far it has held up really well no peeling or cracking. the whole process took me about 5 hours. Hope this helps. if you have any questions just ask!
And..... if you're planning to reinstall the moldings after the rocker treatment, be aware that you'll need to take a heat gun and a pair of pliers and remove the thin metal backing installed on these moldings from Ford. If you remove them once, the metal will become stretched and tweaked just enough to prevent them from laying flat against your panels again. Once you remove the strips, 3M molding adhesive tape will allow the vinyl moldings to be reapplied (without the metal strips).
Great idea on the rocker coatings, by the way. I know someone who had this done to a Dodge extended cab some months ago. He had the spray-on liner material tinted to match the two-tone gray that the lower rockers were originally painted. It came out great.
i would use either wd-40 or go to like auto zone and get a citrus air freshner spray. the citrus with a lil elbo grease will take it off. but after doing this, you will need to wash and wax your bronco. good luck
