I know it's been a while but I have a question. Does anyone have any idea what a 428 block is worth? I know someone with a bare block for sale and they said "make me an offer" and I have no idea what the going rate is on one of these. I saw a post on here recently that showed you can get paid $300 for taking one but I don't think this will be quite the same deal. Thanks in advance.
I have yet to see it but what I was told is it was machined then wasn't used so it's been sitting for several years in storage and forgotten about. So I would imagine that it will need to be machined again but I'm not sure.
I think first I would look at it..see what the bore's look like and see what size the boes are now..make sure it has the main caps on it? See if you cant get a casting # also..
I'd get some more info as suggessted. 428 block price can vary as to std vs CJ/SCJ vs service and industrial etc.... Also as mentioned bore size and condition. If you can go see the block try to get a look at the back. Look for a "A or C" sandscratch on the back. The date code is below the oil filter adapter area. Look for a number/letter/number(s) ex 9J30.
CJ/SCJ blocks with the "C" sandscratch on the back are the most expensive. These are HD blocks in most cases and the most sought after by the resto guys. And cost the most sometimes. These can also have nodular iron maincaps.
The "A" blocks are the std web (sometimes HD tho) blocks found in 66 and up Tbirds, LTD's sometimes 67-68 Shelbys and Galaxies/Fairlanes in PI trim. It varied a bit sometimes what block was found where and in what. Supply and demand sometimes. Grey iron maincaps were used here for the most part.
The service and industrial blocks are also great blocks. Nice thing about the 71 and later 428's is they got nodular iron maincaps. These will also have the vertical ribs on the sides. Note lots of other production blocks have the ribs I'm just talking 428's in general here.
So dig a little deeper to see what's what. Freight is right on the prices. $500 and up to $1000+ are realistic prices. As a comparison a guy on the net54 forum sells 428 industrial shortblocks for $1300-1500 std to .030 bores. These are all HD 70's era blocks, IUB cranks with std C7-B CJ rods and cast pistons.
