2004 4x4 not engaging

I have a 2004 f150 4x4 5.4 L with 49,000 miles. It will not go into 4x4. The light comes on but it sounds like the hubs are not fully engaging? I have been having this problem since it turned very COLD! This summer and past fall it worked everytime. I have noticed that the seleonoid behind the battery on the firewall has a homemade cover over it. Please help!!! Thanks!

really? Your solenoid has a cover? Can you take a pic of it, because they didn't come out with that "fix" until late 06. Did you buy the truck used?

the cover is just the bottom of a quart oil jug. its black, probably Havoline?
