it takes about 3 tries to fire up in the morning, then its rough for 20-30 secs or so then starts to get better. it has dual exh. and i see one bank blows white that first 20-30 sec. its been 38-42 F in the mornings. is this normal? should I plug it in? is all night ok or do I need a timer?
could be the glow plugs on one side acting up or could be fuel fleeding back on one side and leaving the injectors empty.
to see if its in fact the glow plugs on one side or even one glow plug, try plugging in the block heater for at least 2 hours before lift off. If the engine runs smoother on that startup, its prob glow plug issue.
remember, DONT CRANK ON THE STARTER TOO LONG AT ONE TIME.
i plugged it in last night before bed, 9pm, this morning,5am, it started great as if it was warm. i didnt see if it was white smoke on that one bank again, it was dark out. i'll plug it in for a couple hours in the morning, tomarrow i'll be able to check it out in the daylight. i'll post back.
well, if it started rite up after being plugged in, you have a few dead glow plugs. go to autozone, and get 8 BERU/MOTORCRAFT ZD9 glow plugs. they are $9.99 each.
once you have the plugs, let us know, and we will give you the install process. it is quite easy, and will only take you a few hours as long as you do not run into any snags along the way.
but we can overcome the snags also.
yesterday it fired up great after being plugged in. no white smoke, the exhaust was barely visible. this morning after night shift, cold, rain-snow mix, no plug in, it took 3 tries, with the white smoke at first.
is there a way to test or inspect the glow plugs? $80 a set is kinda spendy if only 1 or 2 is bad.

You can do a quick test with an ohm meter by pulling a wire and measuring fom the tip to a good ground. They should all be about the same reading when at the same temperature. However, just replacing one or two usually results in one or two more failing sometime in the near future, so you'll end up fiddling with them sooner than you want. This is from personal experience ... maybe someone else has had better luck?
Try checking for voltage (when the replay is on) at the plugs on the side that's smoking. You may have a bad connection or broken wire. Double check that each connection to the glow plugs is clean and tight.
If they are not Bero/Motocraft, then its probably best to replace them all or you may end up pulling a head after one of the cheapos breaks off. If they come out real easy, then fine. If they turn hard, then move each cylinder to TDC before proceeding because you will have a better chance of recovery should one break (they are rather fragile, so be careful). Also, penetrating oil may help loosen them.
There are many factors on these parts. Especially fuel quality and cleanliness. I would say 170K is doing good. The GP's again depends on how many start cycles they have gone threw. Mainly if one GP is going the rest are not far behind. I replace all at once.
