my 98 4.6 V8 4x4's power steering went out completly. there are no leaks on the pump, hoses, or steering box. the pump doesnt wine and there is plenty of fluid. im just wondering where to start. is there any way to tell if the pump is bad? and this may seem like a stupid question but could the lines be clogged? any help will be greatly appreciated.
There is always a chance that a rubber line has come loose at the inner core of the hose and is completely blocking the flow. But I would think that you would get a whine out of it if that was the case. Can you turn the steering wheel and do the tires respond? Could you crack a line loose and see if it is pressured oil comong out without injecting yourself with the oil? Joe
I'm assuming the belt is still on properly?
The pump is the usual suspect when you have no power steering.
It can be checked for pressure with a gauge and fittings to adapt it but chances are pretty good you won't easily find those.
If it was mine I would just replace the pump.
the steering wheel will move andthe tires respond but it like trying to steer a brokin down car wile someones trying to push it. i think ill just replace the pump tomorrow evening. thanks for the help guys.
well i attempted to change out the power steering pump and the hose with the metal fitting refused to come off. apparently the former owner jb welded it on. had to cut the hose off and now i have to go get a replacement hose tomorrow. hopefully this fixes the problem.
