Hello all, I have an 01 f-350 7.3 psd 4x4 that won't start unless it is plugged in.
The temp today was 43 degrees, I understand that when it is cold that it is hard on it, but 43 degrees? I do have it chipped, exhaust, and the intake done. Any Ideas what is wrong? My first thought is the fuel heater but thought I would ask someone who knows!
Next to the fuel filter housing under the "Powerstroke Cover" are two relays, the one closest to the windshield is the Glow Plug relay. The glow plugs are energized at key on and stay on up to 2 minutes to warm the cylinders. A bad one will cause hard starts in the cold.
When you say "plugged in" do you have battery blankets or oil pan heater. Before you start it can you hear the glow plug relay click. Not sure why you would have to plug it in to get it to start. Not sure if it going to be the glowplug relay.
Strange that you have to plug it in at 43 degrees. I have no block heater, pads or blankets and mine had no problem starting when it's -15 degrees in Alaska.
Thats what I'm talking about, In the past it has always started no matter what temp
In most cases your problem can be diagnosed in the way that Amiller is describing. Jump the two big posts on the glow plug relay for 30 seconds and then attempt to start it. If it's a failed relay, it will start immediatly.
Yes but in extreme cold it's nice to have blankets around the battery so they don't freeze and a pan heater to warm up the oil for better circulation. Try this, when you go out and start your truck, cycle the glow plugs, turn the key off, then cycle the glow plug again, then try starting it to see what it does.
