Hey guys, anyone have any opinions on the pete jackson gear drive for the 460?
I ran one on my 347 maverick drag car with a lot of success. How will it fare on a big block?
I am not sure what you think the benefits of running a gear drive are going to be but they are pretty minimal, they do add some noise that a lot of people like but thats about the only advantage. Will they work yes, I have heard some issues using the floating dog bone style like the pete jackson units and it's suggested and I agree with if your going to insist on a gear drive run the ones with a fixed idler like the Milidon setup. takes a little more work and a little more dollars but you don't have that floating gear that can cause more friction.
The belt drives are actually a better setup for accuracy, and ability to adjust cam timing, although they are also a little bit more on the costly side. But in reality a good roller timing chain will do almost anything you ask of it, I run a FRPP unit against a solid roller cam with 800+ lbs of open spring preasure and no problems.
Another issue that I have not actually had a problem with but have heard about is the gear drives can transfer harmonics from the crank into the cam and cause some issues.
ok,so that is one opinion noted.I never had those problems in the small block as far as transfering harmonics.I have looked at the milodon setup, just didn't want to plop the cash on it.Had also looked at a jesel belt drive setup, but there too;I am not building a "race only" engine.I would think that the jesel would be more for that kind of setup. Not saying it can't be done, just not practical for my app. Thanks for the input though.Just wanted some opinions is all.
I have run the dog bone style gear drives in small blocks myself and never had any problems with the, just passing on what I have heard and read on that one. I made the choice when I built my engine that is race only to stick with a chain, belt drives didn't seem like a good idea in my application. even on a full out race only solid roller cam, high rpm engine the chain is holding up and working great, the gear drive just didn't have any benifit and I have heard from people smarter than me that it actually has a slight (very slight) reduction in power (that is on the dog bone style) as they actually increase drag over a chain. I don't have proof there as I have not put one on a dyno back to back with the different types. Now the PJ drive doesn't say anything about a rpm limit but some do, and are limited to no more than 6000rpm so watch for that.
