I took my truck in for all new tires and alignment. Ended up getting an oil change as well. Drove home 7 miles it was ok. The next day it started rough, smoked white, black, sputtered, stalled, choked, bucked, kicked, settled and idled fine. Off we go. I thought new oil, cold morning, 30 degrees over night. Life is good. Drove about 40 miles two stops and knew there was a problem. When I called to speak to the jokers who did the job, they told me they ran out of Rotella and topped it off with Penzoil.
Does Pensoil make a diesel grade oil that would be ok in my truck?
the dealer i bought my truck used from doesn not sell diesels so they IMO when they did the service they put a non diesel oil in it. 10w30 first thing i did when i got home was changed it I instantly noticed smoother running conditions in the 20 miles i had driven it.
Their PDF file on their site states it is CI4 and not the latest CI4+ or even CJ4. Everyone else has upgraded their convential oil to be CJ4 compliant. If som your using old oil technology... not bad oil... just an old API diesel oil spec.
Glad I found this thread! What is best oil to use for my 2005 6.0? The service advisor said I HAVE to run 10w-30. The 6.0 owners manual leads me to believe this is correct for my temperature range. I couldn't find any 10w-30 that had all the ratings listed in the book(CI-4, CI-4/SL, DHD-1), and Rotella was only available in 15w-40. So what do I need, or what am I missing?

15w40 if above 30 degrees F towing. If you tow with it go with the 40
The 6.0 shears oil faster than the others and you need the 40 .
The 30 is ok if your not towing with it.
Great advice Wanabe, cannot believe we missed it til now. That should be the first thing whenever issues arise after an oil change, if you were not the one to do it.
I've been doing my own changes. I don't trust the quickie lube monkeys and the dealer's are always booked up. At least I know it's done right and I save a couple of bucks as well.
Conger, ain't that the truth. I cannot think of another vehicle that I have owned that is as easy to change the oil in as a 6.0l PSD. The money savings is a nice plus too.
