I'm interested in trading a guy my 94' diesel f250 rims and 265/75/16 tires for his 90' f350 16" rims and 35" tires. I have heard that increasing tire sizes will mess with the gear ratio, fuel efficiency, handling etc. How much of a fuel change would be seen?
I run 35's on my 88 F150 4X2 with a 302 EFI. It take more to get that big rubber turing and more to stop it from turing. If you baby your truck you can keep the gearing the same. your speedO will be off a little.
as far as the gear ratio you wouldnt really be able to tell with a 302.. you will get better fuel economy on the highway with these tires bc you will run at much lower rpms.
We are talking about deisels, not gas. Go to the deisel forum.
f250 has 4.10 gears. If i remember right, the 7.3, you will get about the same mileage with 40" tires as you would with the stock tires, with 3.55 gears.
With that gearing, you wont notice a lot of difference, opposed to the 302's with 3.55 gearings
So if i regear it to 3.55 it will be the same as stock tires with the 4.10 gears?? Wont it still decrease my mpg because of the extra weight, size and friction when starting and stopping etc? If it's regeared is it still hard on the truck?
it would restore the final drive ratio of the truck. it still would decrease mileage due to resistance and weight. also would increase braking distance.
your only increasing your tire size by 10% so your RPMs will decrease by 10% not a big deal. Your Deisel will love the fewer turns per minute but hate the extra rolling resistance. It's a push!
Go to 1010tires.com and you can check the differance in tire size and how much
it will affect the final speed. I went to 35's and my speedometer says 60mph but
im really going 65mph at 25mph im really going 27mph.
Ryan,
You been getting some bum info. First, re-gear to 4.56 would be about the same as stock 4.10, not the other direction. Second, an increase in unsprung weight will effect braking, cornering, handling and accelleration. Thrid, my 35" killed my performance in my 7.3 to the point I my re-gear. I now have an over-heating problem, towing or pulling mountains which I never had before. Fourth, auto trans don't like big tires and the Ford trans suck to begin with.

If its a 92-96 F Series: there is an article on this site showing you how to reprogram your PSOM. It's quite easy, as I did it myself in less than 5 minutes.
If its an E4OD, you will improve your shift points dramatically.
