F-150 ?

Hello All, I am new here and presently driving a 1990 1500 GMC Suburban which is rusting pretty bad. Since I don't want to part with those kind of $ for a new Suburban I am concidering a pickup I am 6'5" with most of the length from my waist down I don't into small pickups like a Tacoma. Tundra also to many $. May I ask what to look out for in a Preowned 150 a few years old like 2003 and up. I have never had a 4x4 in my life so that might be a feature I would want. Here in NJ we get alot of crappy wx this time of the year. Since I have driving a full size Suburban for the past 17 years would I be happy in a smaller vehicle if I could find one that I coud fit in behind the wheel just to get in is a challenge. What say anybody ?

Thanks in advance
Bill from Morristown, NJ

Well I don't know for sure what you would need to look for as common problems but I would like to recommend a truck for ya. If your used to a Suburban my suggestion would be a 01 to 03 F150 Supercrew. I had a 03 before my current 05 and they have plenty of room. I'm 6'4" and going 250 and fit in them fine. I miss my 03 probably the best truck I've ever had but I like you needed 4wd and it was 2wd. The only real downside that I know of was if you use the bed a lot there only 5.5 foot in those years.

Welcome to FTE

I have an 03 Supercrew and love it!I'm 6' 350Lbs and have plenty of room.
Try to get an 03 or newer. The F-150 02s down had a problem with blowing plugs out of the heads. Not enough threads for the plug. In 03 they added more threads and fixed the problem.
Oh and try to find one with a 5.4 motor. Better power.

Yeah i would recommend a F150, i have a 07 supercab and my dad is 6' around 310lbs and he fits in the truck with no problem. 4x4 is a plus when the weather turns bad or when u feel like getting the truck dirty.

First go to your local Ford dealer and grab the free DVD "The Truth About Trucks" and see why "Built Ford Tough" is a true slogan. While you're there hop in a few different configurations to see what you like best. I am 6'5 and 220 and like the extra room of the supercrew, but I don't want to sacrifice on box length either. I have a 4 and 2 year old that I will need to drop off and pick up when they start attending school. I found that they (in booster seats) will fit in the back of the 04 and newer Supercabs if I move my seat up just a little. It would be tight for an adult to sit behind me, but I will be able to just fit the 6.5' supercab in my garage. The Supercrew with 6.5' box wouldn't fit in my garage (unless I were to give it a little extra gas while backing in and make room). I am looking at an 04 Lariat Supercab with power adjustable seats and peddles to allow for that extra adjustment and comfort.

As you will find if you look on this forum the 04-05's have a sparkplug issue. If you are buying used (and the sparkplugs haven't been changed) ask to have the spark plugs changed at a Ford Dealer and paid for by the owner ahead of time as part of the deal.

Good luck in your search for that perfect truck and Thank You for supporting American auto workers.

I know they make it more expensive, but get the heated leather seats. Alot of people have complained about the cloth seats. In my opinion, the entire truck changes from cloth seats to the leather. It felt cheap when I test drove one with a cloth bench seat.

I just drove 5000+ miles in 6 days in my leather bucket seats and I was sitting in comfort. My left arm was numb from not having a proper armrest, but otherwise, very comfortable.

btw, I am 6'3" or 6'4" depending on the weather @ 260 lbs

also, if your into 4 doors, the supercrew can comfortably seat myself and 4 other adults with no leg room issues at all. I have my seat all the way back and a 6' guy can sit behind me without his legs touching my seat.

I'd recommend:

2005 or newer (the 2004 had some issues, mostly these were ironed out by 2005)
4x4 (nice to have and has no effect on gas mileage)
5.4l V-8 (power baby)
XLT trim level or better (hand cranks are so 20th century)

about $20,000 is a reasonably price for a decently equipped 4 door with <50,000 miles. If you don't really care about the amenities, I've seen some 05/06 XL models in the paper for less than $15,000 that are dang near brand new.

Ya know i got hand cranks and didn't really care for them at first but now i kinda like them i mean for me it's on less thing ill have to worry about going bad on the truck as it gets older... also i wont have to worry about power locks or the motors in the mirrors going out either. Plus i get the added benefit of my left arm having super-human strength because of rolling the window up and down...lol
