2001 ranger- To put in 4WD I am suppose to put in nuetral and apply brake. The indicator light should come on and truck will go into 4WD high or low. The indicator light does not come on and truck will not engage in high or low. What could the problem be, how do I check and fix? Thanks for any help
Do you have the electrical shift on the fly or the manual transfer case?
In the eletrical ones, which by your description I assume you have, the motor can go bad over time, especially if not regularly engaged. Do you hear any sort of noise whatsoever coming from the transfer case area when you shift?
It sounds like the electric shift motor on the t-case isn't working, it's the most common problem with the electric shift systems. I see the motors on ebay for 120.00$ all the time if it is the problem.
That was more with the vacume hubs that moving it would help them engage. The electric shift motor should engage sitting still or moving since they have shift on the fly capability. I was just messing with mine yesterday, I got in it, fired it up, moved the dial to 4-high and moved it out of a snow drift it had been setting in. When these systems work correctly, thier flawless. I can't reomend enough, to use your 4x4 at least once a month, play with it in the driveway if nothing else, it keeps it freed up and working properly. Some guy's will have a 4x4 for years and never engage it, things tend to freeze up when never used, the more you use it, the better it will perform.
