I have a 4" turbo-back installed and put the muffler in the "loud" direction. I am going to sound deaden the rear of the cab to quiet the sound down a bit on the interstate. Think there was a write-up on here somewhere about sound deadening. But love pushin thru that manual on the city streets with the windows down now and then. Only thing that was a nusiance in the beginning was the DP riding on the starter motor causing a rattle. Solved that with a bracket off the trans to standoff the exhaust. Done.
I noticed a slight pitch sound change when going to 4", also, the manual stated that the proper direction of the muffler is with the louver openings facing the rear of the truck. that is how mine is, I wouldn't say it is louder in the cab though.
I didn't have to remove any heat shield to install. My muffler is the same design as yours, I installed it the way it was recommended in the instructions, louvres facing the flow of the gases. I assumed this would be quieter since turning it the other way would pretty much be like having a straight pipe since none of the gases can enter the louvers.
You have it installed incorrectly. The way you put it in will make it quieter at the outlet of the muffler but louder in the cab. Turn the muffler around and I think it will help. One more thing - mine sometimes hits a bolt on the tranny crossmember and it reverberrates through the whole truck. I have to make an adjustment from time to time to get it off the bolt. That is only noticeable when it idles though.

That's what I was thinking but I wanted to make sure before doing the extra work. thanks
I had no problem hearing my buddies daughter rambling on for 28 hours straight.
HAHAHAHAHA. They do talk don't they.
You guys removed your heat sheilds???? Every one of mine remains installed on the truck and I have the 5" cannon. It's just a matter of getting it positioned correctly.
I have a Banks 4" with muffler deleted and its not bad inside the truck until you roll the pass window down. I ran it with muffler for a while but did not like the sound
Well it's official I must be getting old. I took a couple of buddies out for a drive to get ther opinions, neither one of them tought that it was much louder than the stock one. Just a deeper sound that's more noticeable at lower rpm's. I guess i'll have to learn to like it because I sure do like the difference in perfomance.
I had the BRP 4" installed on my 99 7.3 and I like the whine that it created. It sounds good. Standing outside of it I hear a whistle sound. That takes some getting use to.
Dont forget about the sound of the "Warm-up-valve" when it kicks in on the cold days. I thought my turbo was going to shell out when I first heard it kick in , and my neighbors probly think my truck has something wrong with it..lol
I got rid of that stupid thing. The turbo hold enough heat in so who the heck needs the warm up valve? Just make noise and hides the beautiful sound of my turbo.
