I have a chance to purchase a factory Ford box cover, or as others call it by "canopy" or "camper shell" or whatever. Quite hard to search for specific answers on this forum!
Anyway, I have a few questions.
1) Was there changes throughout the years regarding the fit on the bed? I don't want to bring it home only to find it can't fit.
2) I'll be really surprised if it still had its original fasteners. How were they originally fastened? Likely scenario, it won't come with any. Are there any original fasteners still available? If not, what is a good and safe alternative to secure the box cover to the pickup?
3) The cover is rather dirty. How do I go about cleaning it up to look presentable?
The FORD toppers were unchanged in design from start to finish, they offered a standard and deluxe model though-the deluxe had sliding windows, a roof vent, and interior light. If you have a '73-'79 LONG BED the topper will fit perfectly, I understand they will fit up to 1996 but have never tried this.
The original hold downs were "J" bolts with rubber washers/steel washers and nuts, I would think you could use "C" clamps to get it home safely until you can find the original "J" bolts or make up your own.
1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog: Section 400, page 8 (Fiche 24-24).
The entire method, (including part numbers) of attaching the camper shell (Box Cover) to the bed is shown.
Ford Dealers will have references. Just take the above catalog section/page references with you when you go. Otherwise, be prepared to hear the usual excuses.
you can take a 3/8 bolt about 4 in long cut the head off bend a hook in it with about a 1/4in radius get large rubber washers about 3/8 tick and about 2 1/2 inches in diameter with a 3/8- 1/2 inch hole in them and some 3/8 fender washers or just buy clamps at a topper dealer that have a wider grip than c-clamps
ebay? Not that I'm aware of, I'm using microfiche. I always quote the parts book section and page number when I'm listing part numbers that may be needed to be researched at a dealer.
The original J hooks were several feet long, btw.
