Oil Filters....

was at walmart the other day preparing for my 1st oil change , got some rotella and an oil filter (PH3766), but i noticed that there was a larger filter that had the same threads and the number were real close (PH3786 i believe). i know back in the day i had found larger filter to use on my vehicle by cross referencing the oil filter and since a larger filter allows for more oil and has more filtering media it was a good thing to do... has anyone ever tried to use the longer bodied PH3786 on there 7.3? also what is the oil capacity on these bad boys?? thanks in advanced ... N8

actually their are alot of guys on this forum that run the larger filter me being one of them. the filter is for a power stroke and it will give you an extra quart. normally these motors take 10qts but with the larger filter it will take 11.

PLUS the PowerSmoke filter removes smaller particles. I can't remember the exact specs, but it's something like the IDI only filters to 25 microns and the the PS filter goes down to 19. Or maybe it was 20 vs. 15...I don't remember the exact numbers, but I remember that the IDI filter passes particles that are 20%-25% larger, and the more and smaller particles you can filter out the better. I know I'll be buying one my next oil change - which is in about another 1000 miles.

the power stroke filter really does make a difference when i bought the truck the oil was very black i changed the oil with regular 15-40 and the idi filter when i check it after only a few miles it was again really black so after that i started using the ps filter and synthic oil and man that really made a differance after 2,000 miles the oil is clean and looks like it was just changed

oil change intervals are really personal preferance between 2500-5500. it all depends on what you do with the truck if it idles alot then your going to want to change the oil more often just like if your towing alot. change the filter every time you change the oil i would stay away from fram filters. i like wix filters i use them on all of my cars trucks and tractors.

Most people around here recommend doing an oil change every 3K - 3.5K miles or so. With the PS filter you can probably increase that to 4K, maybe even 4.5K.

The thing about these IDIs with a stock filter is that they produce so much soot that, like brownieboy525 said, the oil is jet black with soot after about 1000 miles. You sure don't want to leave all that junk in the oil for extended periods.

With the PS filter taking so much more of the soot out of the oil, you should be able to extend the service interval a while longer. At least that's what I've read and what I plan on trying.

Definately the powerstroke filter. But no Frams! Might as well put an empty canister on with those supposed filters.

Just to open your options even more, there is a performance gold filter made by K&N for the IDI that ranges from 10-20 microns. Filter is about 6.5" long, alot bigger than the typical IDI filter. Now I also found a PS filter from K&N too, not sure it would fit right considering the thing is 12.5" long

I also had a question for you guys after reading part of the K&N literature. Would a PSI relief valve and an anti-drainback valve be any good on an IDI? Its available on the PS filter but not the IDI one...

It has been awhile but I believe that stuff is in place because of the heui system that runs the injectors. The oil system needs all the extra anti-foam additives in the CG and CG-4 oil so keeping the system with less possibility of air getting pushed through at start up.

I've been using the PS filters a coupla years now. I was at 4K changes with the IDI filter (Motorcraft plus 15W-40 Shell Rotella-T) and getting good UOAs (Used Oil Analysis). I switched to the PS filter (a Wix) and went to 5K and got a good UOA. I will be backing that UOA up with another when I hit 5K again. If it's good, I'll call it an OCI (Oil Change Interval).
