Hello everyone, I would like to change my trans/fluid in my 99.5 Powerstroke. I looked at most of the post's and could not locate anything. Sorry if I missed it. I usually take it to the dealersip but I want to try it myself.
Thanks for any assistance. Joe
99.5 -7.3, F350, 68k, Crew, Long bed, 2wd. Only mod's are a Banks Trans Command, installed in 2000, Evans waterless coolant, NPG+, installed in 2002. Firestone air bags on the rear. Been runing Stanadyne Performance Products since new. Baldwin PA2818 Open Air filter.
Repairs since new, water pump-before getting rid of the water, Glow plug relay, Tube for Exhaust Back Pressure Valve. Rear Axle seal.
Was told by BTS that when I put in the valve body if I just drained the pan and the torque converter that would remove almost (and again i say almost) all of the fluid. I also went from synthetic back to mercon III per his suggestion. No flush required. When refilling put in 14-15 qts BEFORE you fire it up. Worked great for me.
I'm curious to see what feedback I get regarding my current strategy. Over the years, I've had full service several times by having Ford dealer drain TC, pan, and change pan filter, as well as the Ford dealer power flush to just circulate in 18 qts of new fluid.
For the past three years all I've done is to drain the pan (which I can do myself) and add back about 6 qts to top off to full mark when hot. However, I do this every 3K miles after every oil change, and use 1 gal oil jugs to catch trans fluid. I also have a Magnefine filter in return line which I change every 12K. I was pleased to read on provided link that in pan filter might go 300K and still be ok!
I flush mine myself every 24K and I changed the filter at 48K. I cut it open, and it looked almost new. I'll wait until 120K if the stock tranny holds up until then. I run it hard and tow almost daily in the mountains. I see tranny temps of 195º occasionally and thats using the port on the side which reads 20º or so cooler that actual tranny temp. So that cuts the life of the fluid down significantly.
24K might be excessive for fluid change, but I want the stock tranny to last as long as possible before I spend $3500+.
