Hi,
We've got a '74 F100 with a 360 that worked fine until it was taken into the hills for some 4 wheelin. Now, the starter won't even turn over. The lights, stereo, and other accessories still function normally.
The starter, solenoid, starter relay, and ignition switch were replaced; still, no action when we take the key to start. If we bypass the relay, and take the wire from the starter directly to the battery, the starter engages and the engine turns over.
I'm pretty stumped. If anyone has any ideas or wiring diagram pictures that I could study, I would greatly appreciate it. Seems to me to be a bad wire somewhere, but I'm not overly familiar with Fords...
Thanks guys!
Steve
Mil1ion: the truck is at my buddys house, so I'll let you know what happens when we run that wire. He should be able to get to it today or tomorrow.
The neutral safety switch makes sense for my symptoms. I don't know why I didn't think of that myself... I guess its easy to get wrapped up in it when its your problem!
Again, thanks a lot guys. Let me do a bit more troubleshooting, and I'll post back with results.
Only an automatic should have a neutral safety switch. These old trucks did not have clutch safety switches. We used to move one a very short distance occasionally using the starter motor.
A bad cable is often the culprit with your symptoms.
