03 Explorer ABS strangeness
The wifey's Explorer is doing a strange thing. The ABS light will appear on short trips, stay on, and then not light back up when you restart the car. It seems to occur most when on the interstate and making lane changes or exit/on ramps. Anyone had a similar problem? How do you diagnose this? It seems to sporadic to be anything other than a faulty sensor...but which one?

My dad had a similar problem with his Lincoln a few weeks ago.On his it turned out to be the little tab(for lack of a better word) on his abs sensor on one wheel, was bent slightly (from ice we think),he took it off and straightened the tab and it works fine now.

The Explorer is set up different from his Lincoln.I haven't had mine apart on the Explorer so I don't know exactly how it's set up but on the front wheels the sensors attach to the back of the knuckle I believe,you should be able to follow the lines to it.On the rear I don't think they are at the individual wheels, instead I think the sensors are built into the axle housing.

That's true unless it's Advance Trac equiped, in which case both rear wheels have individual speed sensors. Otherwise there's only one rear sensor mounted near the top of the rear differential.

Are all your tires and wheels the same size? Is your brake fluid res full? Check the exposed wiring and connectors for each sensor. Then I guess you gotta start changing out sensors (I'd start with the one(s) in the rear), or take it to the dealer to have him tell you which one to change. Good luck.

Your right,I forgot about the advance trac difference.I was just going by my 02',it doesn't have the advance trac on it.
