Arrow Tire sizes (performance wise)

Got a question here about some tires. My 94 Ranger was an original 4x2 Splash and from the factory accepts performance sized tires. So because of this fact the last time I needed tires I got some 235/60-15 Goodyear Eagle GT II's all around. My factory wheels are 7" wide and can accept up to 255/60-15's.

I'm wondering how this might effect both the performance/ride as well as the looks of it. My truck sits pretty much level right now. I do realize the size diff is pretty much minimal but a nearly wider contact patch could be nice. I also think these tires look a lil smallish to begin with. Opinions?

The wider the tire, the more resistance, and lower gas mileage. Grip tread also affects ride and performance.

Benaghetto,

What rear-end gearing do you have? If you're lucky you'll have the 8.8" 4.10 gears. That's give you a little more leeway with tire sizes.

Also - that's a really nice looking truck for a 94! Somebody is taking very good care of her.

I'm in the same boat as you - I have 235 R16's and am also doing some research in to what 245's or 255's would do.

Depends on what size your stock tires were. The height difference between the 235 & 255 tires is less than an inch (26.1 vs 27, if my calculations are correct). That amount of an increase might be tolerable unless you live at high elevations or have a four-banger. It depends on what importance you place on acceleration. Don't forget the speedo error created by the change...

Good looking truck indeed.

As said, bigger tires = lower gas mileage. RPM will drop on all accounts past idle. Speedo will be off.

Now...going just a size or two bigger will make a very small difference...hardly enough to matter.

At least you got the 235s...I've got the 14 inch rims and P225s...blah...

My rear if I remember right is the 3.45:1 open diff. Stock tires were what I currently have on 235/60-15's.

I know my speedometer reads fast to begin with. I've been given a ticket for 65 in a 55 when I know my speedo was showing 70. Also from calling friends as were driving on the same road same time and ask what they're speedo said. These tires might get me closer to what it says.

From my calculations like you said reddog99 you're correct 255=27" tall and 235=26.1" tall. Also on that same note the 235's circumference is 81.96" and the 255=84.94". (my calculations are based off of [pi x diameter]=circum and heigth is [2{255 x .6}/25.4 + 15]

I'm thinking that its such a minimal difference that it really wont make a noticable difference. I think I forgot to mention that I'm only replacing the rear tires, my fronts have half tread left on them. And yes I konw that comes from not regularly rotating, sue me! lol I've got a lead foot and figured it was cheaper to wear out only 2 tires than all 4.

Thanks for the compliments as well, I've taken the best care of my Ranger I could Since I bought it a lil over 3 years ago. Slowly adding on to it the whole time.

Basically don't buy an offroad tire if your not going off road. It may look nice, but it will cost you at the pumps!

I hate to agrue, but, at least for highway use, your mpg should improve, due to the lower rpm mentioned. This is why Tour de France riders dont use BMX bikes. But it will be a minimal improvement and the worse low end grunt is a problem.

That's a clean Splash you got there. I wanted a Splash so bad - it was the first Ranger I looked at before I bought mine. I found a '93 Reg. Cab - but my parents stopped me. By the time I convinced them, the truck was sold. I still am mad about that.

I WANT A SET OF THOSE WHEELS FOR MINE!

I think the 2WD Splashes were lower than the non-Splash 2WD factory.

I've got BFG Radial T/A's on 15X7 wheels currently. They are P245/60-R15's. They fit very well, but since my truck seems to sit higher than yours, I'd like a slightly taller tire. I have no rubbing issues at all. My only gripe is that the size is an oddball and usually somewhat expensive.

I don't think so...I've got a '94 non-Splash and it looks to ride the same height as his in the front.
Now the rear sure as heck does seem lower than other 2WDs...my rear is up in the air compared to his (that sounds odd) and my truck spent the last five years towing a trailer day in and day out.

Us 4x4 run tires much larger than stock all the time. I think you should go ahead and get yourself some meats. With a one wheel wonder I'd guess you could use the extra traction. With that small of a size differential I doubt you will notice it too much driving or at the pumps, but you should notice the increased traction and handling. I also have to say that's one nice looking '94. Here in the land of salt and snow theres not many left that nice.

The absolute only thing I really think you should do Benaghetto on your truck is get a chrome exhaust tip of some sort. The old stock exhaust just doesn't go real hot with the chrome wheels and jet black paint.

What made you decide to go white-out on the tires?

I see what you mean. The front does look similar, but the rear is lower. So was the '93 I wanted to get. Maybe they used lighter springs with the fiberglass bed.

Is the bed fiberglass? Hmm...learn something new every day.

Benaghetto...could you get a shot of your rear suspension?
