I'm looking to upgrade my stock speakers to something with better sound quality but have no idea where to begin. I'm looking to spend all that much money, i just want something better than those stock speakers. What is the biggest size I can put in my truck? I have a 2000 ranger extended cab.
5x7 (or 6x8) is the factory size front and rear. If you are only replacing speakers you will see minimal (if any) gains in volume - if thats all you plan on replacing get a cheap pair of pioneers - they are efficient and dont sound that bad for cheap speakers.
A good brand (at least for cheap) is Powerbass. They aren't carried everywhere, but most all of their products are worth what they sell for. The S series speakers are comparable to the Black Series that I have, and they sound really nice. The good thing about the S series is they have silk dome tweets instead of the titanium composites that my Black series have. The Black series tweets are quite harsh when set on flat on my EQ, the S's are laid back and soft compared to them.
I'd look for those, you can usually find a pair of them online for 40-50 bucks shipped.
If you don't mind spending a little bit more, check out Infinite Car Audio's deal on the Crystal Mobile SSX 5x7's. You can get them for about 140 shipped, and they are VERY nice drivers. I'd buy them if I had the money.
