hey guys
i have a 2002 f350 lariat cc with the 7.3. Just recently i was driving down the road slowing at a red light and the truck just died. I put it in neutral turned the ignition off and then it fired right back up. This has now happened approx. 10 times. A friend said it could be the cam position sensor. Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions. If it is the cps is it easy to insall? Thanks Todd
Your friend sound like he knows these trucks. You are experiencing the classic symptoms of a failing CPS (cam position sensor).
The CPS can be purchased at an International dealer for way cheaper than your local Ford parts counter. If you can wait a few extra days, you can buy one off Ebay for around $50.
As for the swap, you need a ratchet, extension, and a 10mm socket. The CPS is located just above and slightly over to the passenger's side of the crank pully. Unplug the wires, take out the 10mm bolt, and install the new one. The old sensor may need a little wiggling to get it out. Also there is an o-ring on it, so if you pull it out and the o-ring is missing, fish around inside the hole to retrieve it. It may be a bit oily, but that's normal.
Sounds like a CPS to me. It will eventually leave you stranded if not replaced. Most of us carry a spare in the glove box along with a 10mm socket and ratchet.
The first time I change it was a PITA! But I have now changed 3 of them and it got easilier. It is just right above the dampner! I keep two in my glove box and tools which is a must!
