Yes, I did it by myself one weekend. Sorry FTE I used an article posted on ford-trucks.com. Great instructions and best yet... Pictures. I need pictures. Like wrenchin' too.
Admin may want to move this to the super duty forum.
Ball Joints are no problem for these trucks as long as you have access to a press. You can remove the steering knuckles and take them to a shop if you don't have access to one. Be glad your not driving a D-brand truck. The ball joint stay with the truck instead of the steering knuck which makes for a bad day. (Yes I have one of those d-brand buddys that need to be shown up often)
So i just did my left side ball joints and they weren't as bad as i thought the problems i had were... I couldn't find a ball joint separator that had wide enough prongs for the bottom ball joint. I went to all the stores. So i put mine in my trailer hitch and now have a custom one. 2 the ball joint press i rented from Auto zone wasn't man enough to push the joints out so i put them in my floor press to pop them out and finally i didn't really understand the seal in the knuckle. I went to the dealer cus the auto parts stores didn't have the seals and was charged 81.00 dollars for the axle seal and the knuckle seal which they called an oil seal. But what oil? there is no oil in the knuckle as far as i know. Im sure i will made fun of but i reused that seal. It looked totally intact and i was told what an incredible pain it is to replace it and lots of people damage it replacing it so it is done and works great hopefully im not going to ball joint hell... thanks for all your help.
when you have the hub seals pressed in and out? i've been getting noise when i turn and thinking about doing the ball joints but this is completely new to me so i'm unsure. i don't want someone else to do the work but i dont want to screw myself over.
I have to agree with rascal on this. The seal can be a pia so if it is in good condition, it might be best to leave it alone. If you have to replace it look at westpsd's link. He described a pvc pipe doing the trick.
The main difficulty is getting the ball joints out themselves. Access to a floor press would be a serious asset.
Good luck.
