I intend to buy this Bed http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/pts/281241119.html on Friday but am now wondering if it may be too heavy for my truck... I am going to put it on a '71 F350, Dually. My door tag reads 8300 MAX. G.V.W. and the axle and springs are in good shape as far as I can tell. The particulars about the bed are 8'x12', 3"x6" tube for the outside perimeter steel, 4 1/2" Channel every foot cross ways, Joist I guess they would be called and two 2"X4" tube rails fore and aft for mounting on the frame. 2"x6" 12' planks for the deck. No headach rack and nothing on the back hagging below the deck. I cant even guess what this might weigh. But I dont want to overload my truck before I put a load on it... I intend to carry about 2000 lbs on the bed when fully loaded...Any thoughts on this appreciated.
If you feel like doing the math here is a calculator to help figure all the individual tubing and so on. I thought it was a very cool calculator to find.
Yeah, thats a pretty cool calculator..I was able to come up with 439 lbs for just the 3"x6" perimeter steel..165 lbs for the fore and aft frame mounting rails.maybe two hundred pounds of wood plank. The calculator gave no options for the "C" channel joist thou. Maybe this bed weighs somewhere around 1000lbs..or a little more. That seems like alot.
I don't think it will be too heavy. I have a 1968 F-350 dually with a Holmes 440 wrecker unit mounted on the back (truck is pictured in my gallery). My operator's manual from Holmes states that the wrecker unit (just the mast, boom, and winch) weighs in at 800 pounds, and that is not including the bed in between the wrecker unit and frame, tow sling, light bar, and the weight of a vehicle hoisted up on the back. My truck has a 10,000 pound GVW rating, but i think you will be OK with that bed.
