Can anyone tell me what this thing is in this picture. It is attatched the piece of metal right under the battery. That metal was attatched to the wheel well wall...what a tongue twister huh!
Oh yeah, and the passenger side core support is loose. Now for the hard part. The side that is not messed up and needs to be broken loose...man I am beginning to think I really do need that acytalene torch.
That's the vapor cannister. Gas evaporating out of the tank goes into the cannister and the vapor is then sucked into the engine and burned. It lowers release of VOC's. Some people who delete it wind up with a gasoline smell at the front of the truck.
I'd come over and help you but I'm in Michigan. I used to live in Arlington when I was a kid. I've been meaning to get out there to visit a friend I went to school with but haven't had the time.
I know what you mean about these things turning into major reconstruction. I only get a few hours a week at best that I can work on the truck. I started what i thought would be a simple engine swap last June. Then I decided to clean up the frame and put in new springs and shocks. Then after I put the engine and E4OD back in, I found a ZF trans and swapped it in. Then it was December and the holidays put me on hold. Next we went into the deep freeze and I don't work outdoors when it's much below 20* or raining or the wind blowing 45 mph. So here it is March and I might get a chance tomorrow to finish it up. I've got some wiring, plumbing and light fabrication to finish and I can start it up.
Ok guys, got some new pictures of the used core support I picked up for $20 from a guy who lives an hour from me. Picked it up today(Saturday) and did a little bit of work on it. Just have to reinforce some metal by adding some sheet metal to were the wheel wells meet the core support, and fix some cracks. Nothing much...take a look! http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...6/IMGP0908.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...6/IMGP0910.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...6/IMGP0912.jpg
Closer now to getting the front end together and the lift done. Next will be the engine swap but that may take some time as I need to get a kit with all the fixins. Pistons, cam shaft...you know everything needed for a engine to run. Anyway I may be able to use some parts off of my old truck to bolt up to the new engine after some clean up. We'll see though. I'll post finished pictures of the core support after the weld job and then again after the primer and paint.
this is a project that is right up my alley as my truck was ever undercoated beign from az, the body has held up but the frame is horrible and so are the body bushings. i think ill end up changing the core support as well mine is rather scaby down low . i dont want my nice truck to sucumb to rust. as i live in northern Il with harsh winter /salt conditions
Hey jk89cat, thats your best bet when it is scabby like you said and all rusted. I found one a guy was selling for 20 bucks. I went back a second time with a sawzaw to cut out the bushings and he said if I gave hime 3 of the 5 blades I had he would knock it off for me, so I did. I picked it up and the mounts look in very good condition compared to my last ones that almost rotted right through, bolts and all. I have some before and after pictures, and some pictures of the first time ever using a mig, job on the new core. I think it will hold fine.
Let me know if anyone you know needs an 86 core support. I've got one in good condition in my shed. Yes sheltered from rust and weather. I know what you mean about the rust, mine what very holy too, haha!
Got some new pictures of priming and painting the support before installation. Its been raining this weekend so no progress. Still have plenty to do with fabrications to the front end of the truck. I will pick up my block at the end of this week and a few weeks from now I should have the kit to put it back together and be rollin' with a newly rebuilt engine in my monster. Headers and dual pipes; the whole nine! Will sound and look great with the lift and all. I just like the feeling of climbing into soemthing big. Anyway take a look!
Next is to post the pictures while putting the front end bacl together. Not to far from completion now. Its a waste to pay someone for this when it just takes patience to do it yourself.
Just installed my support over the last two days. Progress is in the works and while pieces have been apart I have been able to pin point some flaws in this truck. Pretty much the entire engine leaks...transmission fluid, oil you name it, it leaks, except for the gas tanks...thank God! I do need a new sending unit though. Anyway, I only have a couple more things to put together then I can replace the fluids and get her started again until I rebuild the new engine and drop that in. After that will be body work and paint. Looking forward to the future projects. My lift is pretty much complete now. Check out the pics. Went ahead and decided on a aluminum gray for the frame color. Better than black so any leaks in the future will not be hidden by black paint. Still have a couple adjustments to the support bolts this way I can adjust the fenders and bring them in a little closer. The gap from the fender to the hood when closed is a little wide. A little loosening and some retightening and everything should flow well.
All done boys!!! Now my truck is 3 inches higher than when I started this thread and I am happy. I think my *** end is dragging though because of my emergency brake. Maybe I should get a book huh! No idea what to do with that. I guess i will have to take the back wheels off and make some adjustments in the drum....am I on the right track?
