Factory tach

I'm involved in a "conversion" that involves an '83 cab with a factory tachometer in the dash, originally set up on a 300 six. The "recipient" has a 302, and was never equipped with a tach (it's also an '83). Can this tach be modified to monitor the 302?

Yes,
The tach is simply a signal from the coil >
In fact, the Main wiring harness behind the dash should have a connection to just attach to.

Since it senses the pulses to the coil, I was wondering how 12,000 pulses per min for a V8 at 3000 RPM would indicate the same as 9000 pulses for a six at the same speed. On after market tachs I've used, there were separate connections for eights and sixes.

Tachs have to be calibrated or if equipped switched for 4,6,8 cylinders.

The signal runs through the EEC .

see the autozone repair page for the wiring diagram

From what I have been hearing, it's plug and play except possibly a early 1980 dash unit which may be different?

I may be dreaming, but I thought when I took the Ford tach out of the 86 SVO I had, it had a switch in the back for 4, 6 or 8 cylinder.

That's what I'm hoping for. Now that the weather is warming up, I'll be getting back on it, and will post what I find out.
