I was just given a 1997 Ford Explorer Sport 2wd with 160000K on the clock! Very good shape and runs well, But I expected to run into problems like this. Tonight I turned the **** to turn on the lights and they went on but when I turned the **** to shut them off they just stayed on with the dash lights etc. I'm assuming its the headlight switch or something like that. Any ideas?
They aren't automatic shut off (sentinel) lights ?
I thought they were in 97.
I dont think so. My other vehicles have sentinel lights and have the option or at least the graffic that says "auto" this has nothing of the sort! just plain ole On/off and of course running lights!
I replaced the headlight switch figuring it would for sure fix this problem. But as it turns out it didn't. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts? They come on with the switch but most of the time they wont shut off regardless of switch position. sometimes when you start the truck they come on when you start it, again the switch is off! There has been no aftermarket wiring or alarm work done to the truck. Could it be a relay? that would be too good to be true.
I am looking at the diagram, trying to figure out were the headlights would be getting power if the headlight switch is off. The only place I see where they could get power with the switch off is the dimmmer switch inside the multi-function switch in the column. They have a "flash to pass" feature that is fed power all the time. If there was something wrong with the switch, I guess it could possibly feed power from the "flash to pass" to the headlights.

Thats very interesting! Is it something that I could over ride or replace? Thank you.
Mini fuse 8 in the power distribution box under the hood is wired to the DRL module. Remove it & if the lights turn off replace the DRL module.
If the lights dont go off remove fuse 11 (also in the PDB) Fuse 11 is wired to the dash switch & directly to the flash to pass that Franklin mentioned.
If the lights go off look for a problem in the dimmer/multifunction switch.

Sounds good I'm going to go try that! I'll let you know. Should I do this when they are malfunctioning (staying on with the switch off!)? Or can I do this with the lights turned on if by chance their working properly today?

OK I just did this! When I removed mini fuse 8 the lights stayed on, so then I removed fuse 11 and nothing hapend either! I removed the "headlamp" fuse
(I believe fuse 4 in the PDB) and of course the headlights went out but the parking lights stayed on! This is all while the truck was running and the interior headlight selector switch in the "off" position. I'm pushing you guys I know! So you got any ideas?
To check just unplug. if they go out it is the module.
Dude I dont have daytime running lights! Or do I? I dont have the auto light feature, is what I'm trying to say! Is that what you are talking about? Sorry.
