i have a problem. 85 2.8 V6 with the TFI ignition. when the engine is running if i step on the gas in drive or nutural and let off the gas it will back fire out the exhaust. now if i disconect a vacuum line fron the intake and there is a vacuum leak it will not back fire. put the vacumm line back on it back fires. played with timming nothing works any better. now when the timming light is hooked up and i rev up the engine there is no spark advance it will stay the same no matter what rpm it is. i did rebuild the carb. it changed nothing at all. so where the heck do i start.i'm thinking now its electrical.i have a haynes and a chilton books but cant ake heads ot tails in how to check it out. any hints.
Sounds like something with the air pump system, possibly a bad vacuum line, solenoid or diverter valve, especially since the problem disappears with the vac line disconnected.
FYI, the emissions system on these trucks is really hard to troubleshoot after 20+ years. If you can get away with it, do a search on the DuraSpark modification. If not, look into a fuel injection kit such as the Holley Projection or similar.
