Ring Gear Broken teeth

I returned from a trip to find my ring gear on my rear differential with serval teeth completely chipped. It seems like it would take some unusual situation to cause the damage. Any ideas?

It's possible that your bearings are bad and allowed enough play to cause damage.

I am trying to decide if it makes better sense to replace the whole axel with a new one or to rebuild the differential

It's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. Darn if you do and darn if you don't. How many miles, year, size( 8.8 ect.), gearing?

1995 F-150 the differential is 8.8
only 90,000 miles
uncertain of the gearing I have (or what is desireable for a work truck but used a lot on the highway)
right now it is limited slip but I would like to change to posi-traction

I believe that you should be able to find an 8.8 in the bone yard reasonable, but you will need to way whether you are going to keep the truck for along time or if you are going to get rid of it soon. I'm sure that you could spend close to $1k on a rebuild or around $500 at the bone yard.
