I could all but call my 4.2L a dog, but yep i shifted down on about every up grade. No they're no powerhouse but they are also a six cylinder- and in her prime she got over 18 mpgs with my foot in it(always was so couldn't tell ya when i was takin it easy). 145,000 HARD, HIGH REVVING miles and still going strong, and still getting over 17 mpgs. Shes getting tired though.
I have a 2005 screw 5.4,3.73 gears towing package and pull a 7500lb trailer in the summer. pulls great. I leave it in OD and it seems to shift when it has to. I live in NY and travel between 60 and 100 miles each time I camp. It pulls fine even on hills. Gas mileage is about 9mpg when pulling.
